There can be a significant value in buying a locally made machine (in Italy or England), or at least having strong local support. I made my decision and ordered a new model from Anritsu. A KD7405DWT. My decision was technology based, as this unit uses a variable 350W 80kV tube (I need the power range) and it introduces a 0.2mm diode detector array (I'll be the 1st in North America to have it), and a dual core processor for the extra data processing power needed. If I'd chosen a 0.4mm detector, then my options would have also included the Ishida x-ray which sounds very good as well. Those were the two machines which I had local support on, and met my mechanical specifications. I wish everyone luck with their shopping and I hope you've found this discussion useful.

Thanks once again for the advice: the Anritsu machine is a good choice - also available here but we felt service and backup not as good as others. We have decided to include an integrated conventional check weigher - for greater weight accuracy. For our application - product of low density - 0.8mm pitch diodes and 50kV tube are sufficient (0.2mm or 0.4mm while better resolution would I thnk need to run at a higher power). Not sure about the processing power but we are following up on this. We have decided on Sapphire Alliance (Cheyney group , UK) equipment through a local manufacturer (Autopac) as service and backup are excellent.

Dear David ;

If this is still an issue ; we are using 2 Safeline xrays in our process line. This difference here is ; our product which is raisins ; passes through the x-ray machine as a bulk not packed .

I can say that ; we are satisfied with these machines although our product has a very floating density and have some negative rejects because of this.

But I think ; if yours is a packed product having a defined density all the time ; you can surely use x-ray as a checkweigher . But this time you have to be sure that ; packs are rejected because of weight not foreign body like metals/stone etc.

Hope this will help

Aegean

We have due to inaccuracy of XRay as check weigher to link a standard check weigher to the X Ray machine - This will reject under/overweight through seperate reject chute before entering the Xray detector.

This sounds well David. But as I mentioned ; if your product has a stable recipe, shape and properties ; then you can use the x ray as a checkweigher . It also keeps all the rejection history in it memory for you to assess the rejection. I mean you may not even use a checkweigher too , you can apply to your supplier on a supporting hardware etc for this; just an idea..

Ps: If you want to compare Smith and Safeline brands; I advice you to check their rejection system also; one has a rejection gap/flap and the other one has an air gun system .

keep in touch

X Ray as a checkweigher?

It all depends on the accuracy you require. X Ray is an estimate based on software calculations and measurements of a rendered image.

A checkweigher is either loadcell or some other form of strain guage designed to measure the weight in this case.

Checkweigher accuracy = +- 0.2 g

X Ray Accuracy +-2.0 g

Brian

Hi David,
We use Anritsu on three packing lines for finished product packs and a Mettler Toledo-Safeline as pipe line x-ray for bulk. Both are easy to use but I would prefer Anritsu. I am not very comfortable with pipe line x-ray for certain reasons. Previously we used to have an Autopack x-ray on packing line but we had issues with the unit so finally we have gone for Anritsu.
