If like our company the issue of banning smoking on site is always a contentious one - there may now be a solution that could pacify all parties..

I recently visited a training centre where they had installed a smoke free system within their bar area.

The system was very good at removing smoke & filtering it to a level that is cleaner than normal air.

The whole bar area was literally smoke free.

The system has a proximity sensor so is only operational while people are seated at the station. The unit is self contained so there is no need for vents to outside.

Effectively, this removed the need for having a separate smoke room in outer mongolia & allows you to localise smoking provision. I obviously would not advocate using these facilities in production or high risk areas.

Companies that come back and say just ban smoking, I believe are deluding themselves.

I appreciate there are still implications with respect to this solution but I would rather have controlled areas than have unofficial smoking hazards.

If you are interested have a look at Smoke Free Systems.

I am in process of getting some prices - surprisingly, this detail is not on the website.. :(

Sounds interesting - let us know how you get on. That reminds me I really must quit again this New Year - have you got a light?

Ashamed,

Do you really think I would be as interested in finding a socially acceptable solution to passive smoking unless I happened to be an ill fated leper that had to walk to the outer limits of our site for a 'quick' cigarette..

Hope your feeling well enough to have a cigarette.

I thought so...

Do they not do a small mobile or personal unit? Now that would be great as it would help facilitate desk smoking. That is smoking at the desk not of the desk.

:)

Funny you should mention that.

At this same course, smoking at desks was mentioned - one of our safety conscious delegates did actually have a personal desk conditioning unit to filter the smoke.

The only downside was that she had to clean the unit herself. She said it is amazing the amount of sticky nasty residue that was left..

So she decided to stop using the filter and smoke outside instead.

Obviously both our bodies & the environment can take it (as long as we cannot see the results)

It did seem an irony that of 12 delegates on an environmental management course (all with a strong Health & Safety Background), 6 of us smoked..
