Hi everyone,

Stupid question though it is, i need to devise a fool proof means of traceability for the packaging used, for instance if we had a recall i need to know what batch of film or carton went into the effected load.
At the moment we have nothing in place but, i need to come up with something it has to be quite straight forward and mangeable.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated

I believe it is a requirement for primary packaging only, but having heard today about mineral oil migration through film, it might be advisable to do secondary packaging as well.

Start with a simple log that lists the type of packaging, lot number of packaging, date, time and finished product the packaging was used on. That will give you part of your "one step forward". Your receiving logs should list the packaging and the manufacturer. That will give you your "one step back".
Alternately, you could list the manufacturer of the packaging on the first log with all the other information.

You normally find, especially with films that the packaging information is in the inner core. Start with getting your team to record this.

At the moment all we have in place in a QA check that is done on delivery, it needs to be quite straight forward, fool proof as i've said, if anyone has a copy of theirs i could use, it would be greatly appreciated

The person receiving the packaging material should, at a minimum, record the quantity received and the lot numbers.

If you have packagin sheet, like you enter lot number, cases packed, lot number on pouches, etc for each packaging line. Include pacakging film lot number on that track sheet. That will solve your problem. I guess no one can give you full proof plan as operations are different for everyone. With my case we change packaging film roll twice a day. So i have long section in packaging film that was the roll new ? did you left partial (This questino will help you out to decide are you done or still you have not covered 100 %? etc.......

Packaging line leader or worker can find lot number from inside core of the roll... if your suppiler is not providing you with that. Ask him. it is common practice....
