Mock recall is internal practice where it is pretendedproduct in questions is not fit for use (contaminated /labelling issue etc) andthen all distributors/whole sealers/retailers etc are contacted, informingclearly it is a MOCK RECALL PRACTICE.

Practice is completed in two steps

1: Traceability and Mass balance:

Traceability and mass balance for all ingredients from raw materialsto finished product is completed. Total weight of ingredients used should beequal to the weight of finished products+ any processing wastage etc.(certainextent of variation is usually acceptable depending on the processing procedure).

2: Recall

All distributors/whole sealers/retails etc are contacted;informing clearly it is a MOCK RECALLPRACTICE and asked for confirmation of stock of the products in question.

This step is to confirm all contact details of all customers, enforcing and certification bodies, EHO etc are correct.

Whole idea of mock recall is to test out the efficiency ofcompany’s traceability system and improve if require.

I hope it helps.

Martinblue

Dear Hygienic,

It is also desirable to set a maximum time for measuring the "efficiency" in (2) as referred in previous post. This was probably the reason for the "%".

If you search "mock recall" on this forum you will find some explicit procedures for various products.

Dear hygienic,

Mock recall or recall test is indeed to train the recall team and to verify your recall procedures.

You pretend having a recall and are following all the steps in your recall procedure. starting with reporting, recall team meeting, decision taking, gathering information etc.
Unlike what is written by Martinblue, distributors/whole sealers/retailers are mostly not included in a recall test. You would not want them to misunderstand....It is also possible to check the emergency contact during a recall test.
Make sure you report the recall test properly including timings of key activities, persons involved, mass balance, decisions taken, evaluations and corrective actions needed.

You can see this as a fire exercise: probably ( hopefully) you will never have fire, but even though you are exercising how to escape the building so now and then. Probably (hopefully) you never need to do a recall, but you need to be prepared by testing/training on the recall procedures.

I agree with the comments of Madame A. D-tor. The idea of conducting amock recall is to ensure that the recall team understands the protocol and if there are any mishaps then this is the time to find out what went wrong and how one can improve it the next time one conducts a recall. You can also condct a Mock Crisis Management and this too will demonstrate whether the company personnel can get their act together and perform it to the best of their ability and also try and identify areas where one can improve on it.

The Mock recall also shows the robustness of your traceability system and emergency response procedure with regards to product safety. If there is a real incident how quickly can you withdraw your products from the shelves? Can you trace all of it forwards to the particular customers and backwards to the individual materials used? All these can be seen in a mock recall exercise.

Hello there Hygienic,

Mock recall is your verification that your recall procedure is effective. It will give you confidence that whenever a particular incident requires you to recall a specific product due to micro or other issues, it can be easily be withdrawn.
In short, a mock recall ensures that effectiveness of your recall procedure.

Has anyone here conducted a mock-recall under an extreme environment such as you get a phone call from your overseas customer say at 9.00pm in the evening and your customer urgently needed to have your decision. All your key staff have gone back home and worse, its your company's largest customer.

If this was a real situation, would you be able to meet get your team in place and complete your response to the distress in no more than 4 hours as prescribed by say, BRC 6

No, but what a fantastic idea....something for Halloween :dunno:

It won't win me any friends but it would be a very very beneficial exercise ( seriously, I mean that)

I'm entitled to my opinion, even a stopped clock is right twice a day

But which one? Does SQF actually require that suppliers contact their customers during a mock exercise? I'm having trouble finding this exactly under 2.6.3 for SQF 7.2.... Can anyone clarify or verify?

Thanks!
