Good Afternoon All,

What do you think will be the hot topics of 2014 within the food industry? Do you think there will be any changes towards HACCP (Codex Alimenarius)? Will Food Labelling (particularly the EU Food Information Regulations 2011) cause any major problems? Do you think there will be a new major food scandal?

I would be interested to know your thoughts.

Many thanks,

Simon

Traceability, Traceability & Traceability will be hot topics for 2014 . It's already rearing its ugly head with the retailers.

To be honest, I think Codex has had it's day; it's not been updated in a decade ad I think it will be a case of too little too late now. HACCP has moved on immensely in the last 10 years. Its (hopefully) become simpler as people realise it doesn't need to be complicated for the sake of being complicated.

And maybe, the government will get its collective finger out and give us MEANINGFUL guidelines for allergens and labelling (particularly traffic lights & quashing the quasi schemes ; if its vegetarian then there should only be ONE logo that you can use, not a pick from the myriad out there!)

Simon

I think that one of the hottest topic is going to be this SQF "Unannounced Audit". Stay tuned as I share my thoughts.

Trace-ability is going to be the hot topic for 2014, after all the food scares in the last number of years suppliers have to start to demand this. Also contaminants, Heavy Metals, SEM, Dioxins will become more important with Chinese importers pushing this worldwide.

Hi

I also believe that traceability will be of more importance in 2014, too many issues with food safety in 2013 for it not to be.

I imagine that there will be another recall or 2 of immense size and many things will be tossed about as improvements. Little change will be made.  The corporations that run the grocery stores and the large food corporations will not permit that.

Cynical?  Moi?

In the US we just had to get Non-GMO certified for a customer. Luckily we are a low risk food item and they do not need to come to our facility.

Non-GMO is such a hot topic in the US right now!  I can't believe it's not more prevalent on these boards.  Heeey Vermont, how you doin'?

Legislation flying back and forth!  I think I have enough to say about it to start a new thread!

Recently I've noticed more and more difficulties at the russian customs for exportations coming from Europ...including food products.

so I would say hot food topics linked to hot political topics

My guess is going to be a rise in foodborne illness concern.  And really with the increased technology that is always coming out you'd think it would go down... but some of the biggest incidents have been just willful disregard for food safety and you can't science that out of the food stream.

I find that quite interesting Incognito

Here in the UK I subscribe to the weekly NOIDS list (Weekly Statutory Notification of Infectious Diseases (NOIDs) Report ), it's surprising what diseases are prevalent in the UK; and it's handy to monitor the trends. If I see an area that has a elevated number of food poisoning cases, then I search the local press there (online) to see if there's been a reported underlying cause. I also check the number of gastro cases and see if any of these figures tally up.

Helps to keep on your toes!

I think that the public, at least in the US, after some of the recent huge illness outbreaks is a bit disheartened over food safety.  I'm guessing that's why FSMA was passed but I don't think it's going to help.  Food manufacturers are already being audited between 1 - 4ish times a year or more between AIB, GFSI Standards, Federal, State, customers....

Wow... there is a lot of scarlet fever.  I thought that was more of a rare disease (ring around the rosie.. great song horrible history) that was more in the past than a current problem.

My youngest daughter was at risk for scarlet fever.

Anyhow scarlet fever looks to have about 3X more incidents than food poisoning (though we know that food poisoning is under reported)

Audited 1-4 times a year? what bliss!

I had 38 audits last year, and that's with BRC grade A!!

38 audits??  That's insane.  I'm might be lowballing it but I know we don't get audited more than 6 times in a year typically.

Mmm. we just sold a huge amount of stock to an old customer because the competitor they started buying from was located in Russia and the goods were stuck at the port.

I think Allergens is going to be a big issue and getting bigger by the year. It's becoming quite the issue for us and we only have one identified allergen used in our product.
