Hi guys I have a hypothetical question

Could a mouse set off metal detector if I pass a product with mouse in it? I don't have a particular type of product - assume the mouse is living or dead.  Lets chew on it.

Great question Dr Vu...but sorry I don't have a clue.

Will be interested to see the answer, funny validation challenge.

I would say depends on the size of the mouse and the sensitivity of your aperture considering that mice do have iron in their blood.

Interesting phrasing. *I* do not want to 'chew on this'  :cm:

I would say that if your mouse had metal content in excess of your testing standards, (for us 2. mm ferrous, 4.0 mm stainless, 2.5 non-ferrous), it should register as metal contaminated.

Posssibly -especially if you use this rather interesting (& macabre!) control measure! http://pest.tips.net...Steel_Wool.html

*living = Absolutely! The little buggers toss around a bit when seeking escape. This vibration could be your "environmental noise" which definitely sets off a calibrated metal detector.

*dead or alive = Absolutely! A dry product (grain, cereal, etc.) setup will reject a "meat" inclusion as the two are non-homogeneous  in regards to water and salinity levels.  It's very possible as well in a meat product depending on the form...

Sooo happy that I read this topic before dinner!

......not sure you're taking this question seriously Charles? -( a mouse with fillings?????......surely it's more likely that the mouse accidentally left its car keys in its pocket!) :silly:

Well the obvious way to find out is to put a mouse in one of your packages and run him through right? :roflmao:

I'm not sure how much iron is in mouse blood... I'm guessing it's possible, like previous posters said, that their blood might set it off... or if they ate something metal. I've never heard of something like this but maybe someone else has.

according to google....the oral is LD50  is 160mcg/g in mice.... so I'm guessing that would be the maximum possible iron content -whether that would be enough to set off a 'finely tuned' detector..........?

http://www.sciencedi...160540278900542

The mean iron content ± SE of mouse blood is 551 ± 11 1-s2.0-0160540278900542-si1.gif<img height="30" border="0" style="vertical-align:bottom" width="48" alt="" title="" src="http://origin-ars.el...2-si1.gif">

I'm guessing, if this is right, that a 1.5 mm standard calibrated metal detector would not detect the mouse...

On average, mice have around 58.5 ml of blood per kg of bodyweight. A mouse weighing 25 g would therefore have a total blood volume (TBV) of approximately 58.5 ml/kg x 0.025 kg = 1.46 ml.

so assuming 1.5 ml of blood then there would be ~ 826 µg

We work hard to please! :happydance:

Of course our answers are based solely on Google searches and as such we can't be held liable if you pack out a mouse (even though I did say it probably wouldn't detect it sooo I guess it would validate my information)...

My kind of nerds...

Thnx-I am ashamed to admit that Mr I's nerdom far surpassed mine in this particular instance (well done sir!) ...but I will endevour to ensure it never happens again!

I have learned something new though- and that is the average blood volume of a mouse!-(I have to say it looks a lot more than 1.5ml .......when you guillotine them!)

It's insane how much this topic has evolved from a QA topic to rodentology. I think I also saw a QA person transform into a rodentologist right before my eyes :yikes: . Initially I really didn't think this topic would get much lift and here we are on page 2.

Well in order to make an educated guess... first one must educate themselves.  If we can determine how much iron might be in said mouse's blood we can determine if he'll set off a metal detector.  A few Google searches does not a rodentologist make...
