Looking for input on status verification's of claimed raw material. We are a co-packer who does not design, develop, or brand name products so do we still need to ensure claims are genuine or this is something our Customer's should be concerned with?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!  :helpplease:

We are a co-packer as well and unfortunately you have to ensure you overall customers and suppliers are in tune with the food industry standards.  Just remember that as soon as soon as you start managing and handling  somebody else's packaging and raw materials, they are subject to your HACCP plan and you are accountable no matter whose label it is. In other words, you are not free from liability.

We had 2 separate incidents on the past where we got non conformances for not making sure customer specifications for packaging and raw materials were in tune with Food Industry standards and regulations. Furthermore, one incident caused us a visit from the "Feds" (FDA) for not checking on our customer's compliance.

Verification:

Use your customer product specifications to verify the products. Establish a procedure to verify customer's packaging and raw materials according to product specifications. Any discrepancies with the customer's packaging and raw materials must be addressed with the customer.  If the customer decides not to act in the discrepancy; then, get it on writing from your corrective actions procedures. Always get it on writing!!!!

Validation:

From every customer, you should request a Letter of Guarantee or a Letter of Conformity on a yearly basis specially from "problem suppliers or customers as well"  This will validate that the packaging and raw materials you are using are in compliance with statutory, legislative, and third party audits standards and requirements.

Perhaps, this is more you ask for: but, this is based on my experience with this subject when it comes to co-packing.

I hope this helps.

We haven't had any exposure to IP materials until now so your feedback is much appreciated! We do request 3rd party audit certificates from all raw material and primary packaging suppliers as well as LOG's from secondary packaging suppliers. Looks like it's time to implement some new procedures!
Thanks Again!
