Unfortunately, we are asking the question without framing the terms of reference. First, we need to "peel the onion" to really understand what the objective of GFSI certification is. From the responses I see that business owners sign the contract because they want more business and are hoping this will help.

The CBs by default loves GFSI no more needs to be said there, but the other camp is the public. If the public really wants safe food as evidenced by fewer recalls and fewer people dying then GFSI, in my opinion, is not worth it as implemented today but I would also rush to say the implementation solution exists.

Everyone should be signing on to a GFI standard and the performance metric should be fewer recalls and fewer illnesses and or death. Implementation should be 3 tiered: Annual re-certification, local regulatory authority verification and federal verification. Verification results and the application of an audit grade adjustment formula would be managed by the CBs.

By the way are you aware that a significant number of sites cannot manage basic GMPs, Yikes!
