I am a consultant and have participated in many audits for clients. Having an external consultant present shouldn't affect the auditor at all. If the client isn't meeting the requirements, then they aren't meeting the requirements, it doesn't matter who is there.

Sometimes small businesses who are starting out don't understand "auditor speak" so rather than have the auditor ask for the same thing 20 different ways to find something out, having someone like myself step in and point in the right direction can save a lot of time and confusion.

In my opinion, as a consultant we shall guide them in meeting standard requirements. But organization's representative should answer the questions of auditor. So that they will be serious about audit otherwise they stay relax by thinking consultant is there to help us at any situation.
