Hello everyone,

I have a new job at a consulting firm that designs, implements and maintains food programs for companies to allow them to pass government audits. We primarily work with SQF.  I am fairly new to the food industry and am having difficulty trying to fit all the food systems into an organized fashion so I know exactly what comes first, second etc.

I am trying to gather  and clarify a "big picture" (overview) of all the food safety programs there are and where they fit in with each other.

Here is my interpretation of the "hierarchy/tiers" of Food Safety systems.

Please let me know if this is correct.

Business Continuity

Food Defense

Management

HACCP System -----> FSEP-----> 1) Pre-requisite programs                         2) HACCP Plan

                                                        A - Premises

                                                        B - Transport/Storage

                                                        C - Preventative Maintenance

                                                        D - Training

E - Sanitation and Pest Control

                                                        F - Recalls

                                                        G - Allergens

That being said, I understand there is also GFSI and their systems.

Where would GFSI fit on my diagram above?

Also what other categories can Business Continuity, Food Defense and Management be broken down into?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Egalloway

you have covered most of the sections of the food safety systems. Some more sections which you need to develop are

1. Suppliers Management

2. Customer focus

3 Building management

4. Raw materials & finished products specifications

5.Transportation Arrangement

6. Calibration of monitoring and measure devices

Kind regards

Hi Dr. Khan,

Thank you for the reply.

Where would GFSI fit into the scheme of things?

Hi Emma,

I'm unsure what you mean by "hierarchy" but, afaik, the base FS objective of Standards like SQF is to enable the implementation of an effective, auditable, FSMS system. I would have called the FS/MS a partnership / fusion.

The ISO22000 standard (and the ISO associated series of Standards, eg iso22002-X) probably represents a good reference to a generic, conceptual route to the above.

Other Private FSMS systems tend to prefer more prescriptive formats than iso22000, hence fssc22000.

But IMEX government viewpoints (and audits) can vary again from the above, depending on the "local" prioritizations / objectives.

GFSI (Google) -

The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is a private organization, established and managed by the international trade association, the Consumer Goods Forum. under Belgian law in May 2000. The GFSI maintains a scheme to benchmark food safety standards for manufacturers as well as farm assurance standards.

https://en.wikipedia...fety_Initiative

GFSI promotes the concept of harmonising disparate  FSMS systems via the GFSI benchmarking procedure.

For some background on FSMS Standards, can try the attachment in "No.1"  in this (2008) post -
