Taking the cue from recent events on safety issues arising from the residues of additives of Canthaxanthin & Astaxanthin in specially prepared feedmeals for farm salmons. (The flesh of farmed salmons are pink and vibrant as a result of these additives)

Therefore, when buying Packed or Fresh Cut Salmons, how do we as consumers know whether we are buying farmed or wild salmons?

Appropriate information on the label would certainly enable us to make a wiser choice. Most important of all, responsible packaging would protect the the general consumers particularly the immuno-compomised from the impact of these additives.

What are the views of saferpak forum participants on this issue?

Hi Charles,

I don't know so much about salmon. Top and bottom of it is do we ‘the consumers' have enough information to make an informed decision about what we buy to eat, and probably more importantly is the information accurate.

It's very difficult, in the UK we have a Red Tractor Logo on some packaged meats, which means the meat has been produced under the voluntary 'Farm Assurance' scheme, which supposedly ensures that high standards of animal welfare are maintained.

I suppose the only sure fire way is to buy yourself a fishing rod. :unsure:
