Hi I am reviewing my rates and I have no earthly idea what the Industry standard is for Food safety Consultants.

Can you guys give me a ball park of what you are being charged by your consultants?

Hi Trubertq

Depending on your experience and the client ability to pay consultants in Australia charge from $50 to $300/hour. In my case when am dealing with lactose industry I normally charge $500/hr as there are very few consultant in this industry.

It very much depends on the job type and duration.  For example if you were getting 3 months work then no doubt you would strike a deal on a reduced day rate.  I think for consultancy on BRC type issues £300 a day plus expenses would be about right.

$500 an hour. :yikes:

Simon

Lovely, Thanks Guys.

I work long term with people, doing Internal Audits and all the other stuff that hard pressed Quality Managers don't have time to do, so I would be in my sites once a week and more often in some cases. I am like a part time member of staff and have priced myself accordingly.

I would say in the UK nowadays £300 a day is at the cheaper end, £350-400 is becoming more typical with real specialists / experts in their field charging £500.  People who charge more than that?  I've not found one yet who wasn't taking the p***...  Sorry but true.  Especially when one who charged £800 a day also charged travelling and prep time(!)  And what did he come out with?  Two fifths of b***er all.  If you want a lot of business, I'd peg myself at £300 and be pretty busy but for long term contracts you may be expected to go a little lower depending on the size of the company.

That said, don't undersell yourself.  I did have one (shall not be named) international manufacturer try to get me in on a pro rata salary rather than a day rate at £20k p.a. working 3 days a week.  I kindly said the role wasn't for me.

Hello all

Very interesting and useful topic!

Taking advantage of this topic I would like to ask you whether in your countries of work the Service of Interim management is known.

I agree with Simon, all depends of the type of work. It is not the same to only  give advice than to execute or be responsible of aiming a goal. It is not the same to do things right to the first at the lower cost than doings things regardless efficiency and cost. It is not the same to hire a person with social and team related competences/abilities than a person who works individually. Regards

Sorry I'm so late in replying.  Yes you can PM on this site.  I used to do interim but don't at the moment.  The best way I've found is definitely word of mouth.  Great interims are like hens teeth.  Average interims charging ridiculous money are the norm sadly.

We do not charge per hour.

We charge by the day (typical 7 hours) for very short term of 1-5 days plus all travel and travel related.

We also do remote (out of our office) for things like gap analysis or new construction consulting - these days are normally priced at about 40% less than on site day rates.

For full SQF developments we charge on a project basis that includes all travel, travel related.

We also do SQF developed off site and still charge a project rate but sans travel and travel related of course.

Clients that are on our eConsultant retainer programs get a 25% discount from our per day or project rates.

Our base rates for on site are further based on location. Thus an SQF project in the USA or CentroAmerica is slightly lower than one in places like Japan or Italy, etc.

When initially establishing our rates we took a look at what a CB gets on a per day basis for conducting an audit. This is currently about $1300 - $2000.

Our daily rates are within that range and priced lower for long term assignments.

Our average development project is about $20,000 and that allows for upwards of 30 days on site - regardless of days spent on site the project rate remains the same. This is plus all travel and travel related built into the total project.

Payment is required in advance of our work by direct deposit.

We are always busy and always have upcoming projects. Most of our work nowadays is referral having just gotten a offsite/on site development project in the states referred by another client down the street.

Our average commute miles by the way is 1900.

One thing I learned a long time ago is that if your work is valuable you'll never have to quibble over pricing and we never do.

Consultants charge for service in a number of ways: on a time basis, by the hour or day, or on a retainer, plus fees for time.

$300-350 per hour if on a project.  If it is a larger project or an ongoing need a retainer is often the better value.  It is worth understanding experience/connections/ and follow up as well as price.

Just to update.

Most of our development work is now done on a remote (out of our office) basis, I am today winding down at a facility in Yorktown, Virginia - we have been here since September, first to develop their SQF program, then a month off due to a severe fall in a hotel room and then into a separate project at the same company to help them do a lot of their implementation.

We plan on pulling out of here in a couple of weeks and heading home where virtually all work upcoming will be done instead of traveling - after 15 years of traveling it's time to stay home and continue working onward, but have a family life as well plus the start of a new micro green business.

We found that we could lower our project fees in not working on-site, instead of getting out of a bed in a hotel room at 8am and traveling to a company each day for 30 days I can simply walk down the hallway and I'm at work, plus get to enjoy the lake at breaks.

One thing that has resulted in higher conversions of prospects to actual clients is that where we make our home is amoungst one of the lower cost places to live - thus the benefit of that is provided to the client in substantially lower professional fees - hopefully we can obtain most clients in the AR, TX and MO states, as the savings to them will be about 40-50% lower than what we would charge in areas such as VA, NY, New England, Florida, etc.

I charge $150/hr with some stand alone services like label review at a per-project basis. Longer term projects would potentially receive a discount. If travel is excessive I pass those costs directly onto the customer.

:off_topic: Happy to see you based out of my own home state... I no longer reside there but will keep this in mind should I come across anyone who is looking for this type of thing. Beautiful part of the state, too. I miss it so much, especially during these blasted Midwestern winters.

Thank you so very much.  Our home was in Costa Rica and Panama, but we decided to move back to the states, it is a bit more stable (some would argue that, however in the course of things it really is) and from operating a business standpoint I can find no better place than Arkansas for us.

I would say it is. My firm is $95-250 per hour dependent on position and experience. I'm at $150/hr.
