What is the general view or is there a regulation for radios/music in work areas? We do not use a lot of loud machinery and our work areas are divided. We do prohibit phones/headphones/etc but have some areas where we have a radio. Pros? Cons? Hazards? Forbid them or allow throughout the plant? Food safety standpoint?

I see radio's less and less, but where I do see them they are controlled in that they are positioned so as not to become a hazard, included on pre-operational checks as included on foreign material audits, checked for pest infestation, cleaniness, etc.

These days I see more piped in music than radio's allowing management to have control, plus you get to skip all of the above.

FDA does not consider them to be a cleanable item due to holes in the speakers.  I would say it depends on where they are and what type of product you are working with.

Dear veruca,

From an auditor point of view and previously quality manager, I would ask the company for installment of speekers throughout facility and have centralized music (this is not expensive because you can use car radios speekers that are installed in ceiling). Cleaning is something that needs to be defined here as sqflady mentioned.
Use of radios in production is first physical possible hazard, and secondly it is not adequate for cleaning.

I hoped I helped :)
