Site with BRC and IFS Certification with new manufacturing lines

Hi,

 

our external manufacturer is planning on using new lines to manufacture our product but they've advised these lines have not been certified by BRC and IFS yet. The manufacturing site is BRC and IFS certified though (certification achieved before the use of these new lines)

 

They need our approval to start production... my question is, is it legal/acceptable to sell the products made in these new lines? these new lines will produce according their HACCP plan.

 

any help will be very appreciated!

BRC and IFS aren't legal requirements so there is no legal issue.  What you might have a problem with is if it's a retailer branded product they may demand it's all GFSI certified.  But I tell you there is always a way...  If it's a retailer branded product then talk to them and offer to audit it yourself.  If it's your own brand, it's your own risk but if I'm honest I'd audit it myself anyway to cover your site approval and to give yourself some comfort.

 

It's tricky for them though.  It's worth finding out from them if they've contacted their CB to get an extension to scope but the CB may not want to visit until there are some records to review depending on how different these new lines are.

That was very helpful thank you very much!.

 

Product has our own brand, since the new line is in the same location as their previous audit (manufacturer) and the product run on the new line conforms to the food category that they've been certified, we won't ask them to contact CB to have it certified now (or get an extension to scope as you mentioned)  but will ask them to share trials with us before production and also micro test on all the products trialled, is that sufficient to cover identification of any possible food quality risks associated with the new conditions (line)?  thank you again,

That sounds sensible.  I'd still go to the site for prepro or first production if you can but as long as they've done the right things I don't think it's an issue?

Certification Board

In SQF land we call them "Certification Bodies"

 

 

We launched coffee this year between audits which was a change in scope because we added refrigeration and new processes. Our only controls were

1. that the new products went through our product develoment SOP's that HAVE been audited.

2. That our Food safety and quality plans were updated prior to first production.

3. That we documented the change management.

4. That no SQF shields were used in the marketing were used until it had actually been audited.
