HACCP is the methodology upon which all Food Safety Standards are based. In 2005 ISO took the HACCP component of ISO9001 and expanded it into a dedicated Food Safety Standard. HACCP is not a standard - it is a methodology.

Hi Angie,

Indeed, ISO 22000 is a bigger system and includes HACCP.

The  ISO 22000 certification is GFSI recognized. HACCP can't be certified anymore and isn't GFSI recognized.

Kind regards,

Gerard Heerkens

thank you, EvanAUS and Gerard H for your replies...

to Gerard, if HACCP can't be certified anymore, then, why are there still certifying agencies like TUV, SGS, BV etc.? why can't HACCP be certified?

Hi Angie,

Thank you for your reply. Please, read the article in the link below. With this information, I think they still offer it for follow-up audits of the certificates which are valid until January, 1st of 2021.

Furthermore, to choose a certification program, it's very important to look what's required by your customers and (export) markets.

I hope this gave you more clarity about the situation.

Kind regards,

Gerard H.

Hi Angie/Gerard,
Sorry, none of the ISO Standards are GFSI recognised.
Most Certification Bodies have developed their own HACCP “Standards” in order to issue a HACCP certificate.
None of these “HACCP Certificates” are recognised by any of the national regulatory bodies that police the protocols of the Certification Bodies - like JAS-ANZ in Australia and New Zealand.
Most CBs continue to issue “HACCP Certificates” - but they are approved only by the issuing CB.

The FSSC22000 Standard, that is based on the ISO22000 Standard is GFSI recognised.

Hi Evan,

The "independent"  Haccp certificates also tend to be effectively "approved" when printed on Packaging. But maybe not in Australia / NZ.

Kind Regards,
