There is an option in MS Windows to defragment your hard drive - Why?

I believe that the close proximity and logical organisation of the processes or functions within a system aid process flow and overall system performance.

For example how could the necessary communication and cross process understanding be nurtured if a companies manufacturing plant was located in Walsall and it's Sales Department in John O'Groats. Just think of the language barriers alone. :rofl2: (I'm sorry you probably have to be British to understand this one)

A dramatic example it may well be, however, even when processes/functions are separated by a mere road, building or even a plastic strip curtain sometimes it may as well be the 565.1 miles in the above example.

Route Planner

Have you considered this?
Do you agree?
Are your processes fragmented?
Does it cause problems?
Have you made changes to your physical organisation to counteract this?
Would you like to?
Has this got anything to do with 6.3 in ISO 9001:2000?

Simon

I like your terminology of defragmenting system processes Simon.
I believe this term would be very well at home within the kaizen type of activities.
I have indeed used a form of defragmenting when gaining a giraffe view of a system of processes.
To gain knowledge of a particular system,I have mapped the current state and then reviewed the processes in turn, defragmenting the system of processes and sub processes using the format of the visual I posted in the doc exchange forum at SDF.
I use the visual to allow the participants in this activity to perform a system process defragmentation, purging the system of processes of duplication and possibly merging processes for improvement purposes.
Again, I really like your use of the term defragment.
Wallace.

I do too Wallace.

To me Process Defragmentation™ :yeahrite: articulates perfectly a tight, fast, efficient and effective system that delivers nothing but value.

I've taken a look at the hidden factory visual you posted (see link below) and I do like the uncomplicated format as well as the actual process you have defined for ‘fast track process improvement.'

I do think it would be helpful to members if you posted some of your practical experience with the methodology like a worked example or case study that could be read in conjunction with the visual. It's not a critisism Wallace it's just that the discussion forum is obviously not the same as a training course and we don't want to dilute the true value of the visuals.

More Process Defragmentation anyone?

Simon,

Defragging is a good term.

As I am starting the implementatio of TS16949 here, I have identified a number of duplicates or superfluous instructions and even forms!!

The Quest has begun.

Excellent Chris

Wallace,

Looking at the 'how is it implemented' part of the visual could 'teams meet' be expanded to include the definition of scope and objectives for the project? Just a thought.

Simon
