For those who don't know ‘Hell's Kitchen' is the latest UK reality TV show. Basically it's a bunch of B grade celebrities working as chefs for a couple of weeks in Gordon Ramsay's (the devil) Michelin starred restaurant in London. The ‘celebrities' are gradually voted off over the two weeks by the public to determine the star chef. As these thing go it isn't too bad, but I'm a bit concerned about the personal hygiene practices operating in the kitchen.
So far I've seen:
- Wearing of watches
- Eating and drinking whilst prepping / serving food
- Poor or non wearing of head covering
- Hands rubbing all over sweaty faces and through hair before handling food
Yes I am a loser, but there is a serious point to this. Raising awareness and understanding of food safety issues and improving standards is a difficult and gradual process and it's worrying that a light hearted TV programme such as Hell's Kitchen, which is watched by millions each night could have a powerful detrimental impact on food safety without even trying.
What do you think?
Regards,
Simon
