Hello everyone.

It's my first topic in this forum.

I wonder if anyone knows where I could find statistics about the number of companies in the world that are certified in ISO 22000 food standard.
It would be helpful to find information about the sam statistics for de IFS and BRC systems.

I've searched for that information on the internet and in theese forums but I haven't found anything, so I think it's an interesting issue to have here.

Thank you.

Luck and regards.

Sorry to be negative on your first post Qgadol, but I do not believe there are figures freely available. The problem is there are literally hundreds of certification bodies for BRC Standards and most do not publish the number of customers they have. For obvious reasons.

I'm sure the BRC will know, but I don't think they publish any statistics. If you ask them they may tell you.

I'm guessing the BRC have more companies certified than IFS, but again would the IFS tell you they were less successful than the BRC.

It’s more than food safety – its war!

I agree the figures would make interesting reading.

Welcome to the forums Qgadol. :welcome:

Regards,
Simon

Hello everyone, hello Simon.

I'm glad to announce that I have spoken with the BRC and the IFS and they have give me some data that I want to share with you.

The BRC guys have told me that the figures they work with say that there are over 6500 certified companies around the world (200 in Spain).

The IFS guys have sent me a brief in wich you can see that they have over 8000 certified companies registered (3000 in Germany).

I have tried to talk to the ISO, but they have not answer me.

If I find more information i will post it.

Regards.

Thanks for returning to update us qgadol. I'm quite surprised that the IFS have more certfied companies than BRC; especially as the BRC have food and packaging standards. I'm presuming the BRC numbers include food and packaging? I expect ISO 22000 will be much lower, my finger in the air guess is uhmm 1,000. If ISO do get back to you please let us know. And thanks once again for coming back, it makes a refreshing change.

Hi Everyone,
I happen to get an updated partial statistics (Ocrober 2007) of ISO 22000 certified Companies in different countries around the world.
There are of course many organisations and countries which are are not in the list (For instance Israel having around 20 to 30 certifications).
Anyhow there are in the list certified companies in about 60 countries and even this partial list contains more than 700 entries, some of which are multi-site. Therefore Simon assumption is probably about right.

The statistics is done by a Canadian Company Monachus Consulting who watch 22000 to become the international food safety management system standard.

moshes
BTW I failed to upload the file

So today (2009) does anybody know the proportions between ISO, BRC, IFS?

Sam

Dear Sam,

The only statistical data I can remember posted here in recent times (2008) is linked in this thread -

http://www.ifsqn.com...showtopic=10599

The link wouldn't work for me in FF2 but seemed ok in IE6.

Thank you Simon and Charles.

I had seen the link for 2008 for the ISO results. They are already in my report. ;)
I found the results for the BRC on their websites directory, today we would be at 12,242...Just had to take the time to add up the amount of certificates issued per country. So that double the 6500 found by qgadol in 2007. It seems plausible...
For IFS I found a post on other website saying that til date (11 April 09) 7300 IFS certificates are issued worldwide by (only) 60 certification bodies.
http://news.jimtrade...200904/6532.htm
So as you can see not very accurate, I tried asking on the IFS website but no response.

Does anybody think it is possible that the number of IFS certification has reduced?

TO SUM IT UP: (for anyone interested)
BRC: On oct 2007 -> 6,500; april 2009 -> 12,242
IFS: On oct 2007 -> 8,000; ??????
ISO 22000: On oct 2007 -> 1,000; august 2008 -> 1,256 =1,152 + 104 Canadian sites (see post #6: http://www.ifsqn.com...howtopic=10599)

If anybody could fill in the hole, that would be great.

Thank you

Sam

Dear Sam,

Thks yr compilation efforts.

As you say, some of the data is indeed rather uncertain. The IFS link is interesting but validity “unknown” (although does suggest to me that very few certificates so far issued in India ?).

I noticed the comment by Albert Chambers regarding suggestions for changing the standard. I have one for starters – Scrap OPRP and eliminate > 1152 headaches. I guess the problem is that this would then make the standard too easy to understand ;) .

Just found out from the ISO organization, that they do not keep record of the amount of certificates issued. So if anybody is really interested the only way is to contact each ISO member or national certification body of every country to get a accurate answer. And add them up to get the global result... on this point BRC is much more organized than IFS and ISO.

I can't believe ISO would not want to know how many certifications of a standard there are. It's like a business operating without accounts or driving a car without a dashboard. Maybe they don't. :helpplease:

ISO writes the standards, they are not involved in implementing or certifying companies directly.

They have started a survey of certifications. They send out a questionnaire to all accredited certification bodies (not all answer).

The latest one:
http://www.iso.org/i...m?refid=Ref1178

But it does not have info on ISO 22000.

They are collecting information on 2008 and it should include ISO 22000 (it was in the questionnaire sent to the CBs).

Gail

I know but still they need to have feedback on how widely (or not) the standards are used an so we find they do gather this informaion through the annual survey. It appears very comprehensive and we eagerly await the next update including ISO 22000 Certifications. Looks like 2008 figures will be available towards the end of 2009. ISO are the only body that could provide us with anywhere near accurate figures. Thanks for the 'heads up' Gail.
