We are currently developing a new product.

The difficulty is that we buy the product in a concentrated form from Japan, who in turn buy their ingredients (which include Corn) from the USA.

We have to make a GM declaration on the label if the product contains any GMO.

The problem we are having is that the USA won't supply a GM certificate to Japan as they don't know themselves if the ingredients contain any GMO or not, and the Japanese don't seem to want to chase it. They both refuse to test every batch for traces of GMO, and by the time it gets to us, the process has removed any traces of GMO in the Concentrate.

Anybody experienced a problem like this in the past?

Nadine

Hello Nadine,

Excuse my ignorance, but if your process removes all traces of GMO does the product technically contain any GMO? Is the label declaration ‘contains GMO' or ‘is manufactured from GMO'? :dunno:

Maybe this is one of those cases where food safety / quality etc. is an afterthought in the supplier selection process? :dunno:

It's not easy but you could always try and find a supplier who can meet your requirements. Or if you are a big enough customer at least you could threaten to.

More questions than answers - I think maybe I should stick to packaging.

Over to the specialists.

Regards,
Simon
