We will be printing our first direct contact label shortly (a label for frozen pizza). I would like to know what the requirements are. Our inks, coatings and substrate are all approved. I'm wondering about other things that might be required--hairnets, smocks, packaging the product, etc. Any information would be appreciated.

In addition to smocks, hairnets, beard nets, balaclava hoods, sanitary gloves, we also require, (plastic) sleeves and (plastic) aprons. The smocks are worn TO the production rooms and therfore, can be a contamination risk, so we don aprons/sleeves at the entrance to the production room. These are changed out whenever leaving/reentering the production rooms, as well as if the person makes contact with non-food contact surfaces within the production room, such as the floor (while using a broom, floor only, for example). This system was acceptable in our BRC Audit.

As you are in the USA you might want to review the requirements of this free standard:

Thank you James and Simon. As I mentioned, this is our first direct food contact job, I want to make sure that we do everything correctly.
