Hello bjc1963,

My original posting of this a couple years ago stems from small food manufacturers scrambling to fill the title "SQF Practitioner" without really understanding what it means.

To illustrate: I saw a company hire a fresh college graduate that had no food processing experience to be their "SQF Practitioner" (they had HACCP and SQF Practitioner certs)... However, how is this "SQF Practitioner" going to validate (2.5.1.1) a food safety management system with no practical expertise?  Talk about throwing that poor "Practitioner" up a river without a paddle... above the Niagara Falls.

Being a "Compliance Coordinator" is another matter, coordinating efforts to the goal for food safety but does "Compliance Coordinator" they have the expertise to validate technical aspects? i.e. - If one does not have better process control school training in LACF (low-acid canned foods), one certainly cannot validate PRP's in ones HACCP

Hope that helps.

-B

Late to the party, but still have questions after reading this topic -- which lead to a couple of other questions...

1. Must the SQF Practitioner have other responsibilities (a different job title) or can they just be strictly the SQF Practitioner?

2. Is the SQF Practitioner apart of Senior Management? Are they automatically apart? If not automatically apart, can they be - or - must they be considered separate?

3. Does everyone need to be listed in the org chart (even hourly production personnel)?

4. If a department or person is listed somewhere in the manual, who doesn't have much of a recurring role in the SQF Plan, must they be listed in the responsibilities and org chart? (EX 1. in the business continuity plan the sales department is listed for reaching out to customers in an emergency, so do they need to be listed in the responsibilities / org chart?) (EX. 2 The Research and Development guy is listed in the new product development procedure, so does he need to be listed in the responsibilities / org chart?)

1. No, the SQF Practitioner can be a "standalone" position.  I also see a lot of places have an SQF Practitioner who fulfills other roles.

2. SQF Practitioner can be anyone in the organization provided they are a full time employee and meet the requirements set out in SQF Module 2.

3. No, not everyone needs to be named on the org chart, for example, all management is named and production staff are not named (but shows they report to the Production Supervisor)

4. Ex 1 - Probably; Ex 2 - Yes; (will it get caught in an audit? Ex1 probably not, Ex2 probably)
