I know this bloke who is sort of moving sideways and slightly upwards in the organisation and he has been asked to select himself a new job title. His responsibilities are the comfortable things like systems maintenance e.g. BRC/IoP, ISO 9001:2000, as well as customer, supplier, third party and internal / GMP audits, training, CA / PA etc. but now with a new and increased emphasis on Process Improvement.

His remit is to live on the factory floor and facilitate the wide-eyed, relentless and dirty pursuit of Continuous Process Improvement.

This person would historically be called a Quality Manager, QA Manager, or Quality Assurance Manager but the title needs to reflect the dynamic nature of the role and the emphasis on 'hands on' process improvement.

Any ideas?

Oddly enough one of my customers has this sort of position in place.

The wonderfully efficient title given is 'Production Quality Manager'

They are automotive and realised the PPAP and FMEA aspect was 'up front' and was not real world at driving process improvemnts, in their organisation.

Hi Puzzle,

I think the word 'Quality' is definitely out, but then we are just left with 'Production Manager'. Perhaps that's it - Production Process Improvement is the Production Manager's responsibility. In reality though the Production Manager is probably much too busy with production and obviously this is a full time process improvement role.

Thinking about it its not just production though as there's the customer and supplier facing processes that need improving also. No, I think the word 'Production' will have to go; it's too restrictive.

How about Process Improvement Facilitator or maybe Co-ordinator, with these things you've got to be mindful of the resulting acronym - remember Trotters Independent Traders.

So we've got:

Production Quality Manager
Process Improvement Facilitator
Process Improvement Co-ordinator

Any other ideas?

My range of responsibilities seems to closely match that of your colleagues - this has resulted in my being titles Quality & Hygiene Group Leader. This proved highly amusing to my wife, who decided that it had a certain WW2 fighter pilot ring to it, and hence am now referred to at home as wing commander!
Having lived with it for a year (the title, not the wife), I feel that Certification Systems Co-ordinator would be mor apt, as the ISO and BRC systems tend to get you drawn into all areas of the business and their impact on the accreditations.

There's always GDB to fall back on............(General Dogs Body) <_<

Thanks for your input...Sir Yes Sir!

You should be grateful, in my experience of your position that is a damn nice pet name.

It strikes me as we go along that Quality Professionals have some of the longest and most diverse job titles around. I mean if you are a Finance, Marketing, Sales or Production geezer then you can only have a different end bit like Director, Manager, Supervisor, Executive etc. Us QP's always have to have something wordy, more like a mini job description. Mind you if job titles accurately reflected the number of jobs held we would win, the ‘word count' hands down, every time. ;)

Like you say, if the worst came to the worst you could always fall back on General Dogsbody, Wing Commander. I think though I prefer Captain Improvement, and if anyone should ask my middle name, I'd proudly say 'Continuous!'

If this is a fixed period role you could always use the Title:

Process Improvement Management Placement -

Imagine what your wife would say about that acronym

It would certainly provide operators with plenty of extra ammo - like they need it.

I thought it would open up quite a few new doors..

The only problem is - the would most likely be of the steel variety & locked behind you!

The reality is this highlights the wide and varied responsibilities we all have on our shoulders.

What's in a job title?

I was told many years ago that stating 'Quality Manager' on a life insurance application had a negative affect. Apparently it was associated with many claims for breakdowns and a few 'suicides'.

I thought changing job would have been easier!!!!!!!
