Dear Simon,

I am looking forward to getting some help here in developing a Social Accountability System in line with the principles of SA 8000.

Getting the standards under SA 8000 in the internet seems to be an impossible task. Does some out there happen to have a template on this?

Regards
Charles Chew

Hi Charles,

SA 8000 is published by SAI:
http://www.sa-intl.o...8000/SA8000.htm

I have attached a copy of the SA 8000 standard to this post. In the documents section of the SAI web site you can purchase guidance documents:
http://www.sa-intl.o...r/Documents.htm

This is also a useful reference for SA 9000:
http://www.mallenbak...les/SA8000.html

With some useful resources:
http://www.mallenbak.../Resources.html

I think it's time I learnt a little bit more about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

:)
Regards,
Simon

Simon,

I had all the above mentioned resourses. I was searching a questionnaire or sort of checklist for SA8000. In my group many companies have gone for SA8000. My company may go for it in next two years time.

The SA8000 standard seems quite short and written in plain English. I imagine it won't be too difficult to create a gap analysis checklist against the requirements of the standard - if someone wanted to give it a try.

A copy of the SA8000 standard is attached to my earlier post.

Cheers,
Simon

I now see where one of my customers got their 'basis' for a lot of the drivel in their supplier agreement. Ethical this, that etc.

It is sort of restrictive regarding business flexibility for working hours though

Simon,

I have been away lately and is only just able to log on to Saferpak.

Thanks so much for the links on SA 8000. I hope to be able to contribute to Saferpak forum after I am done with it.

Cheers

Puzzle,

It seems strange that you say it is rather restrictive on hours. We have had the working time directive for a few years and this only states the same. Do all your employees opt out of this?

My company works on a 36 hour working week. Being a manager I usually put in a few more hours up to 40 hours and it works great.

Regards

PS I worked over in France where thay have a maximum 35 hour week, now that was hard.

Yorkshire,

Sort of!!

My production colleague and myself have basic 40 hour weeks, but I do a minimum 5 hrs more at the office and sometimes more.

However my production friend does 50 + at the office and then the time at home.

We are a small business and the flexibility is needed to remain competitive.

Some of the shop floor are required to work on, usually on an overtime basis.

Not against the working time regulations but they do remove the flexibility required to navigate the times when work is light and then cover those that are busy.

We are not able to carry extra staff

While we are on the subject has anyone got experience of annualised hours - it sounds pretty good for all concerned.

Back to topic and in all seriousnesss, i can see the relevance to the multi nationals who look to exploit the lower cost labour of the developing countries and the lack of 'social welfare' legislation in these same area's.
