Packaging Designers

I'm not sure if this topic is suitable for under 'The Daily Rant' section, but feel free if you'd like to get stuff off your chest on the subject.

Designers - specifically those entitled 'packaging designers' - Do you have any experience with working alongside a freelance/consultant employed by your company?
Did they impress with their knowledge of your manufacturing capabilities or did they end up looking like a felt-tip fairy?
Were they able to bring new skills to the partnership and work well with the in-house team, or did you feel like they were a waste of time/money?
What qualities would you like to see in a packaging designer? What kind of knowledge should they have to begin with rather than having to be taught?

Please, rant away.......

Cheers,
Rhoda
