We just had our SQF audit in February and I don't remember anything being mentioned about archiving e-mails. An owner of the company has asked me to look into this and thought he heard that GFSI was looking into making this a requirement. Anybody know of know where to find out?

For a long time in the US any public company had to keep such things, we are a private company.

We've been SQF Level II for 3-4 years, and I have not had this come up. You would have to archive recall related emails possibly, but again I don't recall seeing anything specific on this.

Can the owner remember where he/she saw it?

Have a look in the GFSI benchmarking document (http://www.mygfsi.co...version-63.html).  That where the requirements for a standard are listed.  As far as I am aware there is nothing in there related to archiving.

No idea...not even sure if what he saw was in relation to GFSI or if it was another acronym. Do you know if there are federal regulations regarding e-mail archiving?

Most things important to food safety are saved on our network and/or printed.

The thing is, we're looking to updating our network and software and everything else and the owner needs to know what kind of space we're going to need. If we have to archive e-mails, then we will obviously need a lot more space...

Not a clue. I'm not even sure that was the case for public companies per your OP.

I concur with Setanta and Snookie, I have never come across it in a GFSI benchmarked scheme nor in a US FDA reg pertaining to Food Safety.

There is nothing specific to e-mails... But you need to keep documentation, and documentation may come in different ways.....  If you keep any food safety documentation in form of e-mails (e.g. Meetings logs, Customer complaints, Internal Audits Reports, corrective actions)... then you should keep those e-mails..  Unless that information is transferred to a paper or digital log of other form of documentation.
