Good Morning,

I have a customer inquiring about labeling requirements for retail spice blends.  As a wholesaler we do not need to submit our labels for review, but they were asking if there is a submission process for labels to be approved that are going on the retail market. They typically sell meat so they have to go through a review process for meat labels, but I am unawareof a similar process for dry spice blends packaged for the retail market.   I can only find requirements about what should be on the label and guidelines about nutrition facts, but not who would actually review or regulate them.  Is this something that would just reviewed in an FDA or USDA audit or something they need to proactively submit?

Since spice and seasoning products are regulated by the FDA, there is no label approval process.  The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of their label content and that labels are in compliance with federal labeling regulations.

Yes, the FDA or a local state inspector will often review labels during a routine inspection.
