A miserable time of year, so perhaps time to have a smile.
I thought we could exchange some of the dafter non conformances raised by auditors over the years. My starters for 10 are (and these are genuine)

* Leaves blowing across the (open air, uncovered) yard outside the warehouse;

* Not specifying whether the prunes we used were fresh or dried;

* Using a thermometer which had been calibrated (NPL) but had an offset;

Can anyone add to the list

Here are a few:

- Not having enough hand washing stations though there were four, one on each wall, in a 40' X 40' room

- Lack of an sSOP for a test beaker, used for titration in a lab

- Missing SDS for a can of furniture polish, used in cleaning only office furniture, and stored in the office janitor's closet. Also, the office was in a building separate from the food processing facility.

- A Critical Non-Conformance for handwriting on a CCP record, specifically a "1" written to look like a "7." (one instance out of thousands)

- A Non-Conformance for bird activity, specifically a flock of pigeons, flying over the facility at the time of a walk-through. Not stopping, roosting or otherwise lounging...just flying.

These are the best ones I've ever had happen. :)

Hi Mr/Ms Director,

From the other side of the Fence, these 4  audited facilities qualified IMO as "daft"  -

(1)  A square factory which only had 3 walls and a roof. Ventilation was excellent.

(2)  A large house which doubled as a Processing Facility. The Plate Freezer was in the Garden. It had no front..

(3)  A factory where the huge "NO SPITTING" sign was being removed as I entered.

(4) Another "ad-hoc"  factory where the exit from the spiral freezer was on the main staircase.

Hi Director,

I've got a few.

  • A customer comes in and gives us a non-conformance for holding retains per their policy. We had to advise them, that we were following their procedures.
  • Non-conformances given because the auditor forgot to ask a question from their audit form, even though we had those items in place long before  the audit.
  • A non-conformance because the laboratory opens directly to a packaging area for product in a totally enclosed system, and the laboratory itself is totally enclosed by a wall and several doors.
  • A complete specification for number of turns to close a lid on bottles (from an automatic capping machine), even though start-up procedures include seal integrity checks and packaging integrity checks.

As a side note to what Chris DeV brought up as one instance out of thousands, it always seems the auditor finds that one record out of many that has an issue, or that one record out of many that you can't seem to locate because someone filed it away out of order or in the wrong place. That indescribable feeling of sadness then arises.

my personal favourite

''the pest control bait specification does not detail whether they include gluten''

we are gluten free site and the only way bait from fixed to the wall box, will end up in cake, is with the rat,

so we will be more concern about presence of rat in cake not the bait ;)

karina,

If this were a contest, I believe you just won. Wow!

Winner winner chicken dinner.

I guess I better make sure the baits I use are Organic, gluten-free and Non-GMO.

Same! I talked the same auditor off the ledge because he found two black beetles. In the parking lot.
