Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone else in the forum was roped into celebrating "World Quality Month" for November? Our Quality Department received word from the higher powers (AKA Management) about 2 weeks ago and just now pulled me into the fray to help prepare material for this..."celebration" (last minute, of course...how most things work around here).

I was just curious to see if anyone has celebrated WQM before and if I could maybe leech some inspiration from you.

(Because I just know this entire thing is going to fall onto my shoulders. It's the curse of being the one in the building known for her Publisher and Powerpoint skills.)

So...anyone experience WQM before and, more importantly, did your sanity survive?

Hi Christina, to be honest I've never heard of 'World Quality Month'.  In the UK we have 'Movember' where men [who can] grow moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of various cancer.  How about asking employees to submit ideas for quality improvement and have awards and small prizes, maybe a free lunch for all employees.  Pink hairnets.

Cheers,

Simon

I've at least heard of Movember. I think World Quality Month comes from a source outside of the food industry, but maybe it will catch on.

Personally I would love pink hairnets, because pink is the best color!

I came up with a few posters that had multiple quality-based trivia on them, mentioning larger facts (like who the "father" of quality is, all the quality systems that came from Japan, etc.), SQF-based facts, and company-specific facts about quality procedures and printed them out to hang up around the plant. We'll have a trivia contest and see who can remember the most pieces of trivia to win a small prize.

We have 4 shifts, and our Quality Dept. came up with the idea of rewarding the shift that has the best quality for the month with a luncheon with Management. In our case specifically it would be whose shift finished all rework, had the least amount of product on hold, least amount sent back to regrind, etc. I have no idea how that will work out logistically, but the Operations Manager is in charge of that (so therefore it's not my problem, mwahaha).

And we're also beefing up staff with a bunch of quality training. This makes me really happy, since I made a manual 6 months ago that is full of basic information I felt every employee should know about our process, how to identify defects, fill out documentation, etc. So it's finally, finally being used. I could dance, because I spent weeks working on creating it after noticing the inconsistent knowledge of new employees and temps, and now it will actually see the light of day.

Hi Christina,

Never heard about WQM, however we have celebrated World Food Day with events during one week. We have used to present powerpoint during the meal time (in factory restaurant) with relevant issues; games like "the best quote" about food and nutrition, which they have a chance to win a symbolic gift; distribution of leaflets; placement of banners in common areas; mailing...

This is not too expensive and will not take much of your time.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Martina

I've not heard of WSM either....hopefully it does catch on....remembrance day and movember are all that hit the news in November up here in the tundra lol

What about a contest for improvement ideas? The people tasked with the actual doing often have a better/safer way but it might be a bit outside the box???

Funnily enough while you mentioned it, I am going to start posting notes from weekly verification on a white board for all to see as well as days since a CAR, like a safety scoreboard but for food safety

We've been CAR free for XX days and change it daily

Thanks Martina! I do like the idea of showing some kind of presentation in the lunch room.

Oooh. That CAR idea is great! We have a large electronic scoreboard for "days without incident" in regards to employee safety, but a CAR one would be good, too!

Thank you all for your ideas!  :spoton:

I'm sure that I will look slow for asking but what is CAR?   Whenever i see an acronym I don't know, I jump on google and figure it out, but CAR is not as easy to search and not get auto-related results.

thanks

John

Its a Corrective Action Request.....i'm not sure about other finished goods, but in Canada and the US federally registered meat processors have inspectors and vets onsite...the monitor written programs and implementation and will issues CARs if they need to (repeated small non compliance, big issue things are issued CARs right away)

No one wants to get a CAR......they require reams of paperwork and follow up and usually also need additional monitoring added to an already overburden haccp team

However, I do issue internal CARs for maintenance issues that affect food safety....it creates a paper trail that can be audited
