Hi,

I am new here.

Just appointed to be the PL for BRC IoP5.

Company had certified with ISO 9001 before but we dont want to integrate the systems.

My question is, for BRC Quality Manual, I need to start with 1.1 Senior Management Commitment?

I would like to maintain the numbering so that it will be easier for me during the audit.

Dear Shahida,

Speaking from my own experience, I advice you to consider to integrate the two systems. By doing so, you will create 1 (one) Quality management system (your companies Quality system). You can create a "cross-reference table" to:

a) Check whether all ISO norm elements and BRC clauses were implemented (you can put the numbers of the ISO and BRC chapters in the table)

b) Easily find the concerned procedures or quality documentation in your quality system

For the numbering, you can continue with your current numbering system (if this is working well and if your colleagues are used to it). That avoids you to change the numbering, each time that there is a new version of ISO or BRC.

I hope to have informed you sufficiently.

Kind regards,

Gerard Heerkens

Hi Gerard,

Afaik, an ISO "Quality Management System" in the Food Industry excludes Safety-related issues. Hence iso-haccp as in iso22000.

IMO, in the specific context of Food Safety it is preferable to equate "Quality" with the, i think, US concept of "wholesomeness".

Unfortunately BRC, probably as a result of Due Diligence requirements, enhance the confusion by including patently non-safety related issues within their renowned  "Global Standard Food Safety"

IMO it is preferable to avoid blending two Standards intended for basically different-purposes into the same "Quality Manual" (another paradoxical terminology but whose misuse is so well established as to be unchangeable).

As far as choice of numbering goes, as long as it's internally consistent, Standards IMEX invariably place no specific requirements on such, eg see this thread -

Kind Regards,

Hi All,

Greetings!

Thank you for your input.

We intend to do integration between ISO 9001 & BRC.

But for start-up, my management inquire me to start the QM individually for BRC Pckg IoP5 only.

Finding gaps and will decide later if to go integrated/individual.

As mentioned above, you can use any numbering system that makes sense to you.  I am familiar with SQF but not BRC.

SQF requires that you keep a log (register) of all your controlled documents.  As discussed above, this log can cross reference you document number with the BRC section number.

You can always list the BRC section number in your reference section.  In other words, what other documents does a particular document reference.

Hi ShahidaSafirol,

You should use the numbering system that works best for your organisation. Some find it is easier to match up if you number as per the clauses of the standard.

I would start off by checking how much of your current system meets the requirements of the standard using the Self-Assessment Tool:

Attached File  sd302-self-assessment-tool.docx   88.32KB   135 downloads

Help and Guidance is available on the BRC Website here.

Also note that there is a P556: ISO 9001: 2015 to Issue 5 upgrade tool available on the BRC website.

Kind regards,

Tony

Hi Funda,

We offer a comprehensive BRC (Issue 7) Food Safety and Quality Management System which may be of interest.

If you already have a large amount of documentation in place then carry out a self assessment as per my previous post to see what you will need to do to comply with the BRC standard.

Kind regards,

Tony
