I recently attended a training where they gave some excellent ideas for demonstrations to help show plant employees. I thought this might be a good opportunity to share their ideas and maybe see if anyone had other ideas for demonstrations to help emphasize food safety topics. I plan on using these in our quarterly meetings with employees as a further training opportunity.

1. In our class, we were taking apart a belt to determine swab locations. There was also a trash can, tools, etc in the room that we had to find swab locations on. Unknown to us, before class they had spread GloGerm onto parts of the belt, tools, trash can, and other items. After we picked our swab sites, they checked our hands under UV light to see who was contaminated with "Listeria" from the GloGerm. It helps drive home the fact that Listeria and other bacteria cannot be seen, so you could be touching it and spreading it around. We are planning on doing this for a meeting, but spread the GloGerm on the coffee pot, pens, doors, etc.

2. The other demo they talked about in class was to show how compressed air or high pressure water can spread bacteria. They said to get tiny pieces of paper such as the paper circles from a hole punch, and put them on a plate. Then use a can of compressed air used for computers and spray it on the plate. The tiny pieces of paper get spread everywhere. In the plant, that could be bacteria when washing with high pressure water or cleaning equipment off with compressed air. It would have been easy to clean it up when it was on the plate, but now it is spread everywhere.

Are there any other demonstrations you have tried or heard of?

You the Glogerm on hands and then have employees wash as they normally would.....they will be astounded at how much is left on their hands.

Leave slices of white bread out and about....hits home about the molds/yeasts in the environment

small hard candy to show graphically show the bacteria growth rate (2,4 16, 64, 4096,16777216)  Obviously you wont display 16 million + skittles, but you could show 4000+!

Hello,

You can add some examples of food safety issues:

  • The food safety topic reaching the news during last year
  • The number of people who suffered from food poisoning in your country
  • Describe the symptoms of a food poisoning
  • The same for allergens

It can be made interactive by asking the group members to share their knowledge.

Kind regards,

Gerard Heerkens
