Has anyone heard of the term "guardrail Ingredients?" It was used by a customer regarding new products and our own product line. We hapen to private label boneless skinless marinated chicken breast for them and one of the head meat buyers said that we should look into staying away from again, thes "guardrail ingredients." Our product are msg and wheat gluten free. Any thoughts?

First the question would be what "strange" ingredients might you have in your product.

I have only heard the term used twice - one as in, roadkill by the guardrail and two as in a Guardrail 65 WDG product that is a herbicide.

Hahaha, no strange ingredients, mostly corn oil, vinegar blend of spices for the marinades. Hand-cut chicken breast portions. Pretty Simple. here is what they wrote,:It has also been brought to my attention that the products have guardrail ingredients in them.  Ideally the product should be reformulated to remove the guardrail ingredients as Fresh departments and specifically Meat should be clean label going into BLANK to increase brand quality and integrity.

is this the exact sentence or translated from some other language?

Given the reference to clean label, it reads to me as though "guardrail ingredients" may be specific ones that they try to avoid as part of brand image. Some retails/brands have slightly unusual ideas about which ingredients are best avoided, based on e.g. media portrayal rather than any sound quality or safety basis.
I don't think you've got any option but to ask your customer what they mean by this term, and whether they can provide you with a list of the ingredients that they'd like you to avoid.

Wouldn't hurt to ask them what they meant by that statement.

shooting in the dark on this one (my google search was fruitless for "guardrail ingredients")

However, I would think the corn oil may be part of the issue and sugar (if you're using any)

The "clean" labeling business is all about perception..............so you may have to switch out some "dirty" ingredients for clean ones

Thank you all for the responses, the customer is located in upstate New York with stores all over the Northeast region. I will be reaching out to them on Monday to see exactly what they mean by these guardrail ingredients. Thanks again everyone!!

Hello all, copying the response from the customer. "

2 years ago QA, Regulatory, and Nutrition departments put forth a list of ingredients and maximum nutritional values that  Blank Brand products shouldn’t include or go over.  The idea being that certain Blank Brand lines need to be as clean as possible because that is where the food industry is heading.  Fresh departments are under higher scrutiny because consumers expect fresh products to be of a higher quality and/or healthier options.

Every year we go through the list and remove or add ingredients based on any new scientific evidence and customer perception (science over ruling perception so long as there is evidence).  However, one main issue is that we’re currently not allowed to share the list in full because we’re still in the cleanup phase and not ready to release to the public.

But I can tell you the guardrail ingredients of concern in the marinated chicken are:

·         All Blank Flavors

o   Hydrolyzed Corn Protein (also Soy, Wheat, and others are guardrail ingredients)

o   Sodium Benzoate

o   Calcium EDTA (At the moment we allow it in dressings as long as the national brand is using it in their dressings)."

Thanks for updating us...................the sodium benzoate is a fun one! The current alternatives are not nearly as effective and are very expensive. Technology is either going to have to catch up OR we will transition back to multiple facilities country wide (due to shorter shelf) or (and what I'm hoping for) for regional food

"Finding plant-based alternatives for every synthetic preservative is a tall order, but if current demand continues, consumers can expect to see more natural ingredients on labels in the future."

They didn't really explain the term "guardrail ingredient" though did they???

No, Scampi they really didn't. However, their explanation was kind of what I thought it was going o be. A giant PITA lol. Your exactly right too, companies demand clean label, "fresh" products but then turn around and demand a two year shelf life. We are just gonna keep trying to move forward. Cheers!

Hi Spiedies,

IMO the question as to why designated as "GR" was ultimately more interesting than the menu list.

Perhaps they use Bathroom Fittings as internal Code Words.

Kind Regards,
