Needing help determining if I put a bait station in place or not.

 

We're a small produce company and currently use two temperature controlled trailers in the front of our facility as storage. We have bait stations on the ground below the trailers and inside the roll-up doors to our facility directly in front of the trailers. My question for all of you is, do we need to add other bait stations directly around the trailers themselves?

I guess that would depend upon evidence (or lack thereof) of rodent activity in those areas.

Can you be more specific as to why you think you need to place bait stations?

According to our records we have not had any pest activity in the near by bait stations (6 in total). 

 

We thought of the trailer doors as the same as a roll-up door on our dock thus needing bait stations on each side of the entry way. Would this be correct or misinterpretation?  

 

We keep bulk dried fruit in the temperature controlled trailers. We also have a smaller storage unit in our back lot that containers packaging material, no food contact packaging however. Would either require designated bait stations?

The last audit we had the trailers were in place as they are now and we received full points for the question.

Are you audited to a specific food safety standard? If so, what does the standard say about placement of rodent monitoring devices?

 

Absent any specific standard, I don't see any reason to place bait stations around the trailer. There is certainly nothing wrong with doing so, unless during an audit that one bait station that is inspected is the one bait station that is unlocked, unsecured, or otherwise non-conforming.

Hi A,

 

If you're following practices to prevent pests (like keeping the trailer closed when not loading/unloading), this hazard is likely controlled. Unless you have reason to believe they are getting in the trailer, I wouldn't bother with it.
