Good evening together,

Hope anybody can help us with our issue.

We are a new wholesale company based in US and planning to import frozen baking goods from Germany to USA. We have two suppliers, both are BRC and IFS certified. Our product range is around 200 products ( baguettes, bread rolls, loaves, pretzels, cakes, pastries etc.)

We learned that we will need an FSVP plan for our products and have been in touch with several agencies which are providing services in creating FSVP plans.

We heard totally different amount of costs, they are going uo tp $20.000 which made us insecure.

My question is:

Are these serious costs for FSVP? Is there any agency you can recommend or is it possible to create FSVP plan by ourselves?

Looking forward to any responses.

Thank you very much!

Cem

Hi Cem

As you have mentioned that your operations is sole import, storage and distribution of baking goods. The mentioned cost of $US 20K appears to be higher than expected. Am in the business of creating FSVP for baked products and would like to discuss this with you on phone. Please visit my profile on this site or on Linkedin. It is though possible to create yourself a simple FSVP program.

Kind regards

Dr humaid khan

That seems like a lot of money, especially for a small organization.  Yes, you can create your own program.  Depending upon your food safety background, you will want some formal educational classes/certifications to do it correctly.

Some things that might help you:

FDA FSMA FSVP web site: https://www.fda.gov/...ans-and-animals

Document listing all of the records (just published) that the FDA requires for any FSVP program: https://www.fda.gov/...131229/download

If you want to do it yourself, you need to become familiar with HACCP principles (taking a formal HACCP class).  Also, there are actual FSVP training classes available through Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA) that can be found here: https://www.ifsh.iit...n-programs-fsvp

Note that the FDA does not require formal training for its FSVP rule.  At least not that I recall from my PCQI course.  (You can google to confirm, I'm sure.  I don't deal with FSVP other than making sure that my suppliers do).

As for whether to do it yourself or pay someone, it comes down to your background, willingness to take some classes, etc.  IMO, in the long run, you will be happier if you learn to do it yourself, so that you get to decide how to set it up and manage it, but it may not be your focus and it can be time consuming to get up to speed.

Anyway, hope this helps a little.  Good luck.

Todd

PS: The FDA is starting to FSVP inspections, so you want to make sure that you are doing it well.

Hi Todd,

thank you very much for your helpful information. I just went through all the links you provided. A course would be actually the best one for me. But at this time it will be time consuming for me, because I am trying to manage so many other stuff. Could you recommend any qualified individual who could support me in that case?

that would be really helpful.

Thank you very much!

I know that a number of consultants are active on the site.  You might want to try a new thread asking specially for a FVSP consultant.  Ideally, I (personally) would list my area, as travel costs add up for someone coming in.  Some people consult remotely as well.  The only people I know that are certified are currently employed full-time.

Good luck.

Todd
