13.7.2.3  All glass objects or other brittle materials in food packaging handling/contact zones shall be listed in a glass register including details of their location.

When creating this register, do I need to include all areas/machines in the production area or just the areas that works/produces food grade products?

Thanks

I included any glass or brittle plastic within the building including offices, bathrooms, break room, etc.  If something breaks where employees will walk, there is the potential for them to track the broken material back to a food safety zone.  It may have been overkill, but the auditor was happy with our program.

I think this approach is probably the best way to ensure an auditor doesn't become stuck on the G&BP program.

Several audits ago, we had an auditor start to ask about glass items (coffee pots) in the break rooms.  Rather than engage in a potential argument about the scope of the clause (i.e. "food packaging handling/contact zones"), it's probably worth it to just include these items in your program.

Every light, every window, exit signs, gauge dial faces, guarding (plastic), clock faces, touch screens, buttons on controls, sight glasses (like on oil tanks) EVERYTHING. Once listed it just needs review and verification inspections which we do quarterly. Also, something you'll want to put in your new Equipment, Utensils and Protective Clothing procedure (if you don't already have one) When purchasing / installing new equipment, inspect it and record locations of all G&BP and add it to the register (also include in your G&BP procedure)

everything, all areas - for a number of our clients they found it easier to cover everything under the roof.

Also, when the auditor was here he mentioned we needed to have wooded items (like clipboards and broom handles) on our Glass and Brittle Materials Register.

My question is, how in depth do I need to be? do I need to include everything wooden in the production area, including shelving and wooden boxes etc.?

Or will the clipboards and broom handles be sufficient?

Our implementation client worked up three registers - one for glass, one for brittle plastic and one for wood.

Every single piece of wood in the building noted by location is on the register and on the internal audit form.

We removed all wood except pallets from our production areas but only allow them in designated areas away from machines (risk reduced to acceptable level). We now have all steel tables, aluminum clipboards, fiberglass handles etc. No need for listing them... they don't exist so they can't present a hazard. I can't see putting wood on a glass and brittle plastic register though (it's not plastic or glass?) but maybe it's different for packaging manufacturers. For us, no need to create a new register for wood.
