hi there, I am working on getting the company I work for sqf approved. Wondering if there is an issue with buying gloves like below. Will this be a non conformity if there aren't nitrile gloves? We are a film packaging manufacturer.

Hi,

I don't see anything below.

But are the gloves mandatory in SQF ? Why do you use gloves ?

I usually am against gloves, except when it has a clear impact on food safety or for personal safety reason (cold or hot products, for example, or chocolate)

Why ?

When I break eggs in my kitchen, the first thing I do after that is washing my hands. Because I feel egg white on my fingers. Do you think I will wash my hands if I wear gloves ?

I don't think they are mandatory but we do make film packaging so we need to have our hands clean? gloves are cleanest?

As one of our experts mentioned in other topics, wearing gloves tend people wash their hands less frequent. So - hand washing is the best way to prevent contamination from our hands.

from sqf packaging standard -

13.3.2.5  When gloves are used, personnel shall maintain the hand washing practices outlined above.

13.3.3.4  Gloves  used  when  contacting  finished  packaging  material  shall  be  clean  and  maintained  and  replaced when needed.

from sqf Packaging Guidance -

Company choices for clothing, including uniforms, gloves, hairnets, snoods and footwear shall be
based on a risk analysis and reviewed at the initial desk audit.  Clothing worn by staff, contractors
and visitors (where appropriate) shall be reviewed at each site audit through observation and
interview.

no we are not a process aseptic manufacturer. We simply make film packaging-flexible packaging.

Aseptic packaging undergoes treatment at the aspetic packing / filling company to sterilize.

I say no to gloves as they tend to present a false sense of security with people and hands are washed less frequently.  In addition, potential foreign material if they tear or rip.

As a paperboard packaging manufacturer our finishing dept employees wear gloves mostly for grip and to prevent cuts from handling packages. All employees are told it isn't a matter of if you will cut your hands but when and how often! Gloves are cotton with a nitrile inner side and are changed daily.

Hi Hoosiersmoker,

Interesting. Maybe not same process but in my audits of carton suppliers I have never noticed any gloves in use. Then again, it's the exception that proves .......

SQF doesnt require gloves, you have to assess the risk. We package RTE product and we are a gloveless facility. We have an excellent handwashing program and strong training with supporting SOP's. We also have a study/validation about glove vs. non glove in a food facility. If you choose not to use them just have excellent policy and procedures in place, be sure to verify and validate that they work.

For us gloves produce more of a FM risk. Through frequent handwashing and sanitizers pumps near production equipment, we show that we are not at a greater risk without gloves (Risk Assessment).
