Hi all,

We are a manufacturer of pies and recently the question was asked whether pies containing different allergens could be put through the X-ray during the same shift without cleaning. The pies are wrapped or boxed when going through the X-ray. However, would there be a risk of allergen proteins on the exterior of the packaging or a risk from possibly damaged packaging?

Curious to hear how others have handled this.

Thanks

Do a risk analysis and determine the possibility of your product getting contaminated. The way it sounds i think you would be fine if everything is packaged. I look at allergen like paint so if my product is painting surfaces as it goes the inside of the package would be painted but the box would be fine. does that make sense?

That's kind of what I was thinking but wasn't sure because the guidelines regarding this are vague.

well its vague because every facility is different and our process is different so the best think to look at your operation and determine your risk, but again the way it sounds you should be fine if the x ray is after packaging

And yet when different allergen containing packaged ingredients are stored, separation is required.

Kind Regards,

We would still consider this an allergen hazard, albeit a smaller one, due to the possibility of the packages becoming opened during the process.

A quick allergen clean between flavors can be completed to cover it.
