Great idea that I think we should implement at our workplace. Looking forward to seeing the discussion here.

Sounds like fun! - Your ideas a good. - We have not done a week the last few years during the National Food Safety Month we do something each week of that month.  Some of the ideas that have worked fairly well for us are:

  • Create a FS Word Find Puzzle - entries turned in are used for a drawing for a prize
  • Create a FS Crossword Puzzle - entries turned in are used for a drawing for a  prize.  Can use your bulletin board idea or table tents with information to help answer the questions.
  • Use a Find the Differences Puzzle - Reminding employees of the importance of being aware and notify management when something is different or wrong. - entries turned in are used for a drawing for a prize.
  • Guess the Number of Items in a Jar - The winner gets to keep the jar of goodies - Not sure what is popular in India but we have used
  •       Hot Tamales along with the theme to be sure to cook foods to the proper temperatures
  •       Bite Size Snickers with theme Food Safety is nothing to Snicker at.
  •       Bite Size Reese's with theme "You and Food Safety Make a Tasty Combination."
  • We used Glo Germ and a black light to promote proper handwashing.  Maintenance built us a small blackened out box with a small viewing window.  We put the glow germ on the employee's hands, they look at their hands under the black light in the box.  Then go wash their hands and view them again to see how well their handwashing technique is.  For each person who tried they were entered in a drawing for a Day Off with Pay; plus they learned if they could improve on handwashing :).
  • We have used the Wii to play electronic darts with theme "Stay on Target for Zero Contaminations" The top scorers won a prize or sometimes we do a team prize.  The department team with the highest average wins a pizza party.
  • Using your poster idea - Have employees get their kids involved or could work with a local school for food safety themed posters. The winning poster for designated age groups get a prize and their poster is displayed in a prominent area of the facility. Can even submit winning posters on Facebook or local news.
  • Serve ice cream or something cold with theme to remember to chill refrigerated foods quickly and keep them cold.
  • We found an electronic version of the game show "Press Your Luck" and the employees were given opportunity to go a round.  The top three players with the most fake money at the end of their round was the winner and won a prize.  Theme was "Don't Press Your Luck when it comes to Food Safety"
  • Used the game Flick'n Chick'n creating our own score mat.  It is a toss game so theme was "Flick'n Chick'n for Food Safety".  The theme is nothing special but got the attention of the employees because it was weird and the employees really loved throwing the rubber chickens to try and earn points.  This one we made a team game so the team with the highest average won a Fried Chicken Lunch.
  • Use Oragami as a teaching moment.  Can use to stress the importance of following procedures; one thing out of sequence or done wrong will not create the desired finished product.

I could go on and on but I think you get the idea.  You can use almost any concept to promote food safety.  Just think about what the employees in your area like to do and try to build off that. - Anything you do will be a good thing. - Good Luck!

Please share anything you end up doing to give us ideas for our future promotions.

The WHO has some information, materials and educational pieces that may be of use

Perhaps some nice logo'd merchandise if you're doing prizes
