Hi all, we just finish our BRC Packaging Material audit last month. There are one question from the auditor that I need some confirmation. It is about the type of hand sanitizer that used in the facility. Right now we used the alcohol-based hand sanitizer with alcohol concentration 85%. Due to the COVID-19 issue, we also enhance our sanitisation program by perform daily sanitisation on the place and equipment that always keep in touch (exp: keyboard, machine control panel, door handle) in the production area using alcohol-based sanitizer. Does BRC give any guidelines or requirement on acceptable sanitizer to use? If yes, how much does the acceptable alcohol content? Need justification and information regarding on this matter. Thank you.

A common knowledge is that a sanitiser with >70% ethanol is enough for antiseptic usage.

If the auditor has a doubt of your 85% one, I would have questions about his expertise to carry the audit.

Still, IMO you can get the TDS of your sanitiser from supplier to prove your point.

BRC  afai can see give no specific answer however they offer these resources which you can peruse -

I suggest as Post 2 you simply quote CDC or an equivalent ( I daresay the experts vary from 60-70 % minimum but 85% shud be  unquestionable (albeit perhaps financially wasteful).

Kind Regards,
