Hello to all the Canadians

We have multiple plants across the country and as such we are used to some variance re: CFIA inspections

Now, CFIA has notified us that they are going to do mid shift salmonella swabs...........WTH.  We are not RTE and on our commodity, there is zero research available on any correlation between salmonella on equipment (NFTC) and the finished good

Anyone else experience this?  It appears CFIA is making up rules as they go and trying to apply the salmonella performance standard for meat to other commodities (and that was actual product testing not enviro)

That seems SO counterintuitive! What happens if you get a positive?

Exactly Setanta!  If we ship the product, we'd may be forced into a recall depending on where the positive swab was taken (pre/post wash)

Now, CFIA has always swabbed for ecoli and TPC during ops which is fine---you'd expect to see those at that time

Now were being forced to HOLD 1/2 a shift of production until the swab results come back (about 5 business days)

Something stinks here that's for sure and I know the USDA does not do this for the same commodity

So, they're going to swab raw meat for Salmonella? I thought, CFIA was testing only standardized products - in our case, it's always been cream cheese. No, we haven't got any notifications from CFIA (yet?)

Sorry Canadians about your new rules. In the beginning of FSMA, the FDA inspectors were making up rules as they go too/determining how the rules should be interpreted. I wish you luck.

Have you asked why the change/science behind it?

No no, meat has always been swabbed (or swished depending) that is not new and I'm not talking about product testing, that's not new either

These are enviro swabs mid-shift
