Got a pretty good scam email yesterday. I noticed that while it looked like an official email, it wasn't from a .gov email address. The rest of the email was pretty convincing.

Just an FYI, your organic certifier should handle all this for you so you shouldn't need to do anything through USDA.

I had one a few months ago that came in as a docusign. The scammers created a REAL docusign. So the email that went to you came from docusign, not the scammers. Then within the docusign was the malicious link.

I've been hit with 3 of these, and they're usually pretty good. The scammers will scrape the USDA publicly available database and grab your REAL:

  • Company Name
  • Company Address
  • Phone Number
  • Organic Certificate number

Then use that to craft the email. All 3 times, our certifying body had a warning email out within the hour. So it looks like they'll do a mass campaign all at once.

Yes, exactly that. They had all my info and my cert renewal date; everything. I did let our certifying body know and they said they will send out a targeted email warning people about it.

Gone are the days of 'please kindly at your earliest timeliness' emails, these scams are getting good. ;)

And here I thought switching back to organic from non-GMO might be less of a nuisance.
