Hi I am curious as to the opinion of having a 3rd party virtual verification/validation vs. a on site one done on our metal detector.  We are a manufacturer of packaging for the food industry and only two of our customers require/request the use of a metal detector. Is a virtual verification acceptable to an auditor?

Thank you for that information, that is exactly what I wanted to hear. The expense for an on site visit is astronomical.

Service/calibration may favor an outside tech, but you can easily enough avoid fees for a validation on a metal detector.

A set of standard certified test pieces and a few hours of someone's time should be enough of an investment to get that done.

Have you shopped around? I've never found service / verification visits to be that expensive and to be honest, always used those visits as an opportunity to upskill myself or others.

The way it was explained to me, it is done through video conferencing with the certification company.  We would perform the test using NIST traceable test media, as the certification company watches via video.  They would provide a certificate and the sticker to place on the machine

I probably should have clarified, the cost is not so much the actual service, but the travel cost associated with the visit. That has been our experience the past several years.
