We are an SQF Edition 9 low-risk label producing and packaging facility (NO FOOD) and are reviewing our handwashing requirements for employees who briefly leave the production area only to deliver paperwork to the office and then return directly to production.

In this scenario, employees remain within controlled internal areas and are not using the washroom, eating, smoking, handling waste, etc.

We understand that in low-risk packaging environments, SQF generally expects:

  • a documented policy,
  • a risk assessment,
  • and consistent application of GMP controls.

We are considering whether hand sanitizer on re-entry — or a documented risk-based exemption — could be sufficient instead of full handwashing in these cases.

How are other SQF packaging sites handling this?

  • Do you require full handwashing every time employees re-enter production after dropping off paperwork?
  • Have auditors accepted sanitizer-only controls or risk-based exemptions in low-risk environments?
  • How do you define “production” vs. “non-production” areas in your procedures?

That will be fine

We have a painted area on the floor that is designated for non production staff to access production offices   never been an issue with SQF or CFIA

I've been to a few film manufacturers (direct food contact product) and they don't even have handwash sinks at their entrances.  You'd have to go to a restroom or laboratory to wash your hands if you wanted to.

Hi karlieh,

As per previous posts, in principle the idea of using a hand santizer on re-entry sounds fine.

I think it just needs to be backed up with training and monitoring to ensure that just using sanitizer rather than washing hands on entry doesn't become a new habit.

Kind regards,

Tony
