Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a guide on how expanding from traditional 5S to 9S (adding Perseverance, Commitment, Coordination, and Synchronization) can significantly strengthen Food Safety Culture beyond standard GFSI audit compliance.

I'm attaching a free PDF resource on this framework. I would love to hear your thoughts and experience implementing operational discipline in your facilities!

Best regards,

Claudio Riquelme Jorquera

Consultor & Auditor GFSI

What does adding "Perseverance, Commitment, Coordination, and Synchronization" to 5S do to change behaviours?

Paper doesn’t work, people do, so you need to focus on the staff, train them, communicate with them, motivate them, and set a good example yourself. Gemba and 5S are much more effective in this regard than all sorts of 9S.

Actually did that, max 3900 characters.   Wouldn't work.

Best to post in English being the point.....

Still, being a Spanish speaker, I read the doc.   Pura chafa.

Wording is very important with these kind of documents, a slight mistranslate can change a lot how its interpreted.

Also, the original 5S comes from the Japanese language

Seiri (Sort)

Seiton (Set in Order)

Seiso (Shine)

Seiketsu (Standardize)

Shitsuke (Sustain)

It was translated in a way that it is working in English too.

This is not 9S so far.

I think a lot of things get put into a "culture" bucket. But if I'm honest, I am doubtful they really are culture. The same happened initially with lean. People loved 5S but treated it as a glorified tidy up and shadow board manufacturers loved them for it.

Did it change behaviours? Did it heck.

To Oleg's point, culture isn't something on paper, it's how that system is lived in reality or what other system actually lives. I'm less interested in lots of ways in what system you have when it comes to culture than:

  1. How you developed it
  2. How you verify it's still happening
  3. How you continually improve it
  4. And who is involved in each of the above; because that matters to how much it's going to get adopted

In many ways "it" doesn't matter. It could be an SOP on how to do a metal detection monitoring. It could be a super fancy bit of standard work developed with the support of lean experts in a Kaizen event. It could be a bog standard shadow board. I don't care. What matters is how much it's adopted and maintained. What achieves that is how much people are involved, how much it's discussed and what happens when it is followed and what happens if it's not followed.
