Hi all,

we are aiming to get BRCGS Storage and distribution certified, and under 15.1 A risk assessment shall be carried out of the proposed packing operation to establish potential risks to product safety and quality and establish suitable controls to mitigate the risk.

Interpretation: Specifications shall be agreed for these operations and all labels shall be used according
to a controlled issue procedure.

Does anyone have any example of what a label issue procedure or a label issue/reconciliation log should look like? We do not print any labels, and all labels are supplied to us directly our customers.

I can't share documents from employers but the kinds of controls I'd expect to see would include:

  • How labels are stored. So I'd recommend having them in a fixed storage location and consider the risk of similar labels next to each other.
  • Controls for a line at the start and end of run, i.e. before anything else is brought to the line, the line is cleared of packaging from the previous run and this clearance is recorded.
  • How labels are issued, i.e. who issues them. Some plants have a specific person who is dedicated to that task and does so from a plan. Ideally if you have an ERP system, scanning them out to the asset is good practice especially if you can set up something in the system to alert you if it's the wrong label. If not then you'd need a manual issue record but as part of this I'd expect a check that it's the correct label and the quantity issued.
  • Labels then taken to the line, put on, line set up. First label off should then be used as the check which should either be scanned or on manual paperwork. If the latter, I'd encourage quality attribute sheets of the current label design and specific things to be signed off against it. E.g. brand, product name, weight, barcode.
  • During production at specified frequency, e.g. every 30 mins and at any reel change and after breaks, do the same check.
  • At the end, do the check again with the last label. Return to the store. Again do a quantity check (not always easy, weight may have to be used which is inaccurate but better than nothing) and a check again of the label before returning to storage.

I'm not quite as fat as my picture would suggest. The camera adds pounds. Just how many cameras are on me?  :roflmao:
