Two words of advice for anyone thinking of setting up a website 'Don't Bother' No, 'Think Strategically'.
When you first set up a website cost is the number one issue. There's the web design software, graphics packages, forum software, domain name etc. and then there's the Web Hosting, which is vital.
Without getting too technical the website sits on a Web Hosts server and the server serves pages, images, files etc. almost instantaneously (hopefully) to your web browser allowing you to view the page you requested. The website owner could be based say in Bognor Regis and the web host could be in Outer Mongolia and the surfer would be none the wiser. (I wish mine was).
There are zillions of companies who offer web hosting packages and its difficult when you are a bit green to plump for the cheapest. When you are not so green you wish you had paid for 24/7 365 day email and telephone support. The problem (and the fun thing) with the internet is you don't know whether your dealing with a multinational conglomerate or a man with a dog in his shed.
I don't know my web hosts name, address, telephone number or email. There's a web form you can fill in for support, but it mustn't be working, or maybe he has taken his (very fit) dog for a walk.
To get technical again for a minute the thing that cost the most money in all web hosting is data transfer. Every time somebody views a page, downloads an image, reads a PDF file etc. as I said previously it's downloaded from the server and the number of kilobytes is logged and this is called data transfer.
Data transfer can accumulate significantly over the month especially if the site is popular. We started off with an allowance of 1 gigabyte of data transfer in January, then upgraded to 2 gb in February and 3 gb in March. Unfortunately 3 gb is the maximum our web host does and we are up to 3.8 gb this month. It does say in the web hosts blurb that less than 1% of websites ever use more than 3 gb of data transfer. Fair enough so we are unlucky and now we have been prevented (I think) from uploading new pages, articles etc. to the server.
I think it's time to look for a new professional web host. Changing/reconfiguring everything to a new host and server is a horrendous task although you shouldn't notice any difference.
Who am I angry at? Me - I didn't think strategically.
Can anybody loan me a Yellow Pages for Outer Mongolia?
