No never Sankara, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

Dear Sankara

I am very sure about was your question is about but I am going to try.

I think that you should take an " additive " as an " ingredient " in general terms.

Food, ingrediens and additives generally are manufactured in some way, I mean, they go into a production process. As a result you have a food product therefore you should follow the labelling regulations set in your country.

I hope this can help

Sincerely
Esther

Dear Sankara:

Do you mean something like this?

Example:

Wheat flour, xylitol (permitted sweetener), egg, tartrazine (permitted colouring), sodium bicarbonate (leavening agent), xxxx (anti-caking agent), yyy (emulsifier),.... etc.

Dear Sankara,

As you can see, yr query has had various interpretations. Not unusual and livens up the day! Yr desired label will clearly contain info related to various features -

I understood that yr finished product is a food additive as, I think, Esther also so the auditor seems to either be referring to a lack of information (eg approved as food ingredient, method of application, maximum concentration, restrictions to type of consumer) from a regulatory aspect or suggesting that maybe consumers would like to see the intended uses for this product since not self-obvious( eg the auditor did not know ato be used for what purpose?) which might or might not be regulatory.

As per Yong's post, if it is official approval characteristics you are referring to, the usual way is also to attach the designated code (eg E number) which would depend on the consumer location I guess but this does not seem to be a "use" feature.

I remember you posted info on this product somewhere else but too lazy to hunt, what does it do?, is it local market? and unknown type of product up till now?. I know I am going to look silly shortly!

To summarise all the previous, what kind of info is required on the label??

Rgds / Charles.C

Kind Regards,

Charles.C

Dear all,

Thank you for the suggestions. As Charles put it, I am also looking for information required on the label?
Our product, a natural sweetener being 2500-3000 times sweeter than sugar, is not going to the end user directly. It is a so called intermediate one can say. It can be used in pharmaeceutical industry or as a table top sweetener after necessary formulations, can be used in ice cream, jams, yoghurts etc.

So far we were designing our own label. A typical table top sweetener , right in front of me, says

'' Enjoy great sugar taste!
Add ......every day to your tea,
coffee , fruit juice etc...
Millions of users world wide trust
.....to bring back the joys of
sweetness into their lives.

..........contains ............. which is approved by
FDA, WHO and American Diabetes Association.

Ingredients:

Not for phenylketonurics
Not recommended for children

DOM
DOE

Manufactured by.......
Store in a ...... ''

What I had in mind was something like this. But my doubt is whether we should go for all such details as we are selling it as an intermediate?

A Sankara Narayanan

Dear Sankara,

OK, that's a bit clearer now. I presume this product is not yet being sold ?

A short answer would be that the label must have (1) regulatory info which is normally specified by the (local) FDA (I presume this exists and is available where you are ?), otherwise it cannot usually be legally traded as an intermediate or directly for obvious safety reasons. (2) marketing info which as you noted is maybe related to the originality, distribution method, desire to educate etc, as a minimum such items should be validatable (eg 1000 x sweeter than 'x' based on what ? - I believe this is politely called "truth in advertising" lack of validation has on occasion cost companies a lot of money, claims for detergents, toothpaste spring to mind. Perhaps yr location is more willing to believe advertising and less critical when it is proved wrong ?? (Not criticising, just interested to know).
"
I can imagine that if the product as presented to yr auditor was simply labelled "sweetener approved by FDA" some request for clarification would be immediate however I'm sure you had more info than that.

As a purchaser of such intermediate products, my first queries are usually - what is it?, cost ?, approved by who for what?, evidence?, application data ? demonstration possible? Free sample ? Doesn't have to be on the label though since the necessary info is required before any further action will be taken, known as 'covering one's back".

Dear Charles,

Thanks for the input. As far as sweetness of thaumatin is concerned, we are not claiming it - it is stated by the International Sweetener Association - please refer the attachment (already posted once elsewhere).

Dear Charles,

The taste of thaumatin is characterised by a short delay to the onset of the sweet taste, followed by a very long sweet taste in the mouth which lingers on . I have seen visitors looking sceptical when we offer a pinch of our sample, expression changing to some sort of approval after tasting and then leading to a cry of excitement .....

is it late to reply? anyway, just sharing what i know. when it comes to label claims and label content, it is usually the regulatory group that handles this since there are local and international requirements to be addressed.

Dear Jong,

No, it's never too late to comment here and welcome to the forum.

I rather agree with you however it's not so easy to define some of these sweet words in practice. Even things like "carbohydrates" have varying interpretations from my memory.
