BRC auditors tend to walk around with the standard and note points against the relevant section. I think that's limiting though because they can easily prempt what they think they will see in a certain area and as a result, miss stuff.

Agree!

Dear GMO,

and as a result, miss stuff.

Some would consider this as a positive aspect to be encouraged.

Well we all know we have played the game of diverting the external auditors attention but frankly if they were all less easy to distract, everyone would have a more thorough audit and hopefully standards would go up?

Wel, internal audit notes are necessaly but not mandatory. The good thing about notes is you can be able to trail what were the findings, becoz its not necessarily that one will find non-conformances. suppose you dont get non-conformities and you dont have the notes, how will you confirm that you did conduct an audit. I would always recommend that auditors take notes, not necessarily in ink they can be typed in a computer / laptop, but very important to have the notes. theu will also assist in future audits coz they can always be referred to in subsequent audits. If however you are using a checklist, it can be adequate, but not as adequate as the notes

I've gone back on myself on this issue.

The factory I was talking about previously, I'd typed up the notes (including conformity and non conformity) and they still wanted the hand written ones! I now only show typed notes. Soon I hope to be using electronic means to record audits anyway so then it would be a moot point...

Ah, talking about version 4... Love it when an old thread gets revived.
