Hey everyone, I have a few, most likely, simple questions that I already know the answer to or SHOULD already know the answer to but these questions have been bothering me so much that I decided I'm just going to ask to be sure I'm doing things correctly. Question #1: Are HACCP SOP's etc. basically the same as SQF SOP's etc.? Meaning- Can I use our HACCP Plan SOP's for SQF?  *Our HACCP plan is SUPER SUPER basic. TOO basic. I'm sure that I could use the HACCP SOP's but they need to be revised and juiced up for SQF standards. Which leads me to my next question- Question #2: If I use the HACCP SOP's for SQF (regardless of revising them or not) do the "new" SQF documents get their own document identification #? Or, do I use the document identification # from the existing SOP and update the revision #? If so, do I update it on both documents in the HACCP Plan as well as SQF?

Question #3: If revising the documents from HACCP to SQF do I need to have a document change request filled out etc. or is that only when revising SQF docs? Hopefully all of these question make sense. Most of all hopefully, I don't sound like a complete air head having to ask these questions. I have a real issue with second guessing myself and I just want to be 100% sure I'm doing things correctly. Thank you in advance, J

Good morning jnehl,

Ok, let's knock these out:

Question #1: Are HACCP SOP's etc. basically the same as SQF SOP's etc.? Meaning- Can I use our HACCP Plan SOP's for SQF?

    * Our HACCP plan is SUPER SUPER basic. TOO basic. I'm sure that I could use the HACCP SOP's but they need to be revised and juiced up for SQF standards. Which leads me to my next question-

You will not need two different sets of SOP's. Your goal should be to review the current SOP's and make sure they meet the more stringent requirements. If they don't update the ones that don't.

Question #2: If I use the HACCP SOP's for SQF (regardless of revising them or not) do the "new" SQF documents get their own document identification #? Or, do I use the document identification # from the existing SOP and update the revision #? If so, do I update it on both documents in the HACCP Plan as well as SQF?

You will not need a new document, just update the current documents if revisions are made (AND TRAIN ON THE CHANGES!)

Question #3: If revising the documents from HACCP to SQF do I need to have a document change request filled out etc. or is that only when revising SQF docs?

You will want to have a document management system in place that requires you to follow a procedure when revising any documents that relate to food safety.

One more thing, HACCP and SQF are not diametrically opposed. That is to say, you don't need one or the other. HACCP is the way to determine risk and assign control points and critical control points. SQF is a standard that has requirements for many parts of your food safety system. With SQF, you will need either a HACCP program, or a HARPC program as well.

Hi jnehl,

Re ^^^(red) - IMO, without seeing some examples of your hacccp SOPs, Qu 1 is simply unanswerable.

And similarly for Qu 2

SQF IIRC claims to use Codex HACCP as its reference base.

And in case it wasn't obvious for question #1, you may/will need to ADD SOP's (probably many PnP, not just SOP's) to your existing set in order to meet the more stringent SQF standard.
