Hello,

My company is planning on buying food-contact packaging directly from a manufacturer in China. The negotiations are being done with a US company, but the manufacturer is in China.

FOB China and we will use a fright-forwarder to bring the items to US.

Do I need to do anything related to FSVP? I found some info that FDA will not enforce FSVP for food-contact substances, but it is from 2018 and I don't know if it is current.

Thank you

Hi rdquality,

if i m not wrong you mean Foreigner supplier verification plan (FSVP)?

Yes, if you are GFSI certified this should be part of your supplier verification program (technically you have to have manufacturer's documentation for approving a supplier) and also  this is FSMA requirement as well.

Thanks

Correct (Foreign supplier verification program).

We are SQF certified and have a supplier approval program in place, including packaging. But I wasn't sure if we need to do anything extra to comply with FSMA requirements.

FSMA does have guidance on it since they will be providing the primary food-contact packaging.  Supplier approval will drive this but they must be able to have records for "hazard analysis reviewing specifications such as material composition, allergens and additives, physical and chemical properties, and microbiological susceptibility for their packaging and material. These specifications or documentation needs to be current and readily available."

The GMP guidance just says:

"Appropriate quality control operations must be employed to ensure that food is suitable for human consumption and that food-packaging materials are safe and suitable."

Cheers!

Hello Namishka,

What kind of manufacture's documentation do they need?
