Dear Abdul Qudoos, AOA.

ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 both have entirely different objectives, directions and scopes. In the scenario of a food industry, objective of ISO 22000 is only "Food Safety" which is one and of course the most important feature of Quality of the Food Product. On the other hand, focus of ISO 9001 is the overall quality of the Food Product. Conformance to ISO 22000 does not cover some other important features of quality such as
  • Customer satisfaction (the most important feature of QMS),
  • Customer communication (on issues other than food safety such as related to delivery, packaging, lead time etc.),
  • Supplier's evaluation & re-evaluation (w.r.t. criteria such as cost, delivery, lead time, production capability etc.)
  • Control over purchasing information,
  • Control over design and development processes (that are not related to food safety.
IMO, you should treat ISO 22000 as a subset of ISO 9001. Also assuming that "our system is excellent and in place, everyone appreciates us" may become a very dangerous situation for you and your company as continual improvement is must for sustainability and progression in the ever-increasing competitive market. Continual improvement in overall quality of your product is the only key to increase your strengths, lessen you weaknesses, open the door of new opportunities and save you from threats.

Not to be mentioned that if you are an export-oriented company, ISO 9001 certification would be an extra star on your shoulder.

What you should do, IMO, is to integrate the additional requirements of ISO 9001 into existing established ISO 22000 compliant FSMS.

ISO 9001 continual improvement requirements are as an overall business performance not just product quality.

I've not read ISO 9001 since the good old days of the early 2000's. Someone sent me a list of the changes in the 2008 version though and I have to say it was the biggest non-event I have ever seen (For £100 or so).

Any users of the 2000 & 2008 versions feel the same way or did I miss something?

Regards,
Simon
